Nowadays there's more to being a firefighter than donning the uniform and heading out to fires – we now have a strong focus on fire prevention and education about the importance of fire safety.
Recruits are required to complete a sixteen to eighteen week Recruit Firefighter Training Course and subsequent on shift skills consolidation for a further period of eight (8) months. It is a permanent position with 12 months probation.

There are no educational prerequisites to apply. The selection process is designed to objectively determine an applicant’s suitability for the role of firefighter.
An applicant seeking employment with MFB, as a firefighter must be either:
an Australian citizen
a permanent resident of Australia
a New Zealand citizen who has entered Australia on a valid passport.
