Work Experience at Mitchell High School

In recent years more and more students are doing work placements as part of a VET course in Year 11 & 12, and many students have part-time jobs. However these experiences are not the same as work experience, which is still an important part of the school curriculum. Students who miss their opportunity to go on work experience may well be disadvantaging themselves when it comes to finding employment.

Great reasons to go on Work Experience:
1. To get a job.
If you are leaving school soon and looking for a job then doing work experience a few times may well land you the job. Once an employer has seen you at work for a week you will have a terrific advantage over other job seekers. It is also a great way to get a part time job while you are still at school.
2. To find out if you like a job.
Students often choose subjects for Years 11 and 12, and choose their university and TAFE courses, based on the job that they think that they want. It makes sense to try the job for a few days first. Maybe it's not such a great job for you after all!
3. To find out what you need to do to prepare for a job.
Maybe you need to improve your fitness, or to study chemistry, or to aim for a particular university course.
4. To get a good reference.
At the end of your work experience the employer will fill in an evaluation sheet on you. A good evaluation is worth its weight in gold, and some employers won’t even consider you if you haven’t done work experience!

There are many other valid reasons for doing work experience including just finding out what the world of work is like.

Rules. (A brief overview)

Students must be 14 years old.
Year 9 students can go in Terms 3 & 4, Year 11 students in Terms 1 & 2, and Year 10 students can go throughout the year. Students must make sure that they do not have exams or other commitments in the week that they are planning to go.

To organise your work/exp you need to get the paperwork from the careers adviser.  The work experience form can be downloaded (click on Student Placement Record in the section headed "Forms"), but you also need "The Parents Guide to Work Placements", "The Employers Guide to Work Placements" and a letter from the careers adviser to the employer.  Find an employer who will accept you and ask them to fill in the form.  The completed form (with your signature, your parent/guardian's signature, and the employers signature) needs to be returned to the careers adviser.  You will then be given a form for your teachers to sign, and this must be done at least one week before your work experience starts.  When this form is returned to the careers adviser you will be given three copies of the work experience form for yourself, your parents and the employer.  You will also be given an emergency procedures card, a diary and an evaluation form for the employer to make comments about you.

If you are going to be working with young children (childcare or primary school for example) you will need to have signed a further form.  See your careers adviser.

If you are going to work experience in the construction industry (builder, plumber, electrician, roof tiler etc) you must have completed an Occupational Health & Safety training course.  See the careers adviser for details.

Exceptions

There may be exceptions to who can go although you must be 14. If you have a special reason e.g. Year 11, Term 4 and looking to leave school for employment, talk to the careers adviser.

Some employers must be approached by the careers adviser and not by the student.  These include Blacktown Police, Blacktown/Mt. Druitt Hospitals, Featherdale Wildlife park, and Taronga Zoo.

SAFETY ON WORK EXPERIENCE

Your health and safety is of the utmost importance while you are on work experience. Before you go on work experience your employer will have signed your form to say that any Occupational Health & Safety risks will have been assessed and managed, and that you will be given induction training when you arrive. You will also need to obtain a copy of the 21 Questions (work experience preparation form) from the Careers adviser. Furthermore, you should go to the following websites to read about workplace safety and work through the games and/or tests. www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/default.htm. workcover.cadre.com.au/index_old.html
