In recent years more and more students are doing work placements as part of a VET course in Year 11 & 12, and many students have part-time jobs. However these experiences are not the same as work experience, which can still be of great value to a student. Many schools no longer offer work experience, and if this is the case at your school you could consider doing work experience during the holidays. To go on work experience during the holidays it is most important that you arrange to have insurance cover, and one company which provides this is IC Frith & Associates (http://www.icfrith.com.au/html/Work_Experience_Home.cfm). Great reasons to go on Work Experience: 1. To get a job. If you are leaving school soon and looking for a job then doing work experience a few times may well land you the job. Once an employer has seen you at work for a week you will have a terrific advantage over other job seekers. It is also a great way to get a part time job while you are still at school. 2. To find out if you like a job. Students often choose subjects for Years 11 and 12, and choose their university and TAFE courses, based on the job that they think that they want. It makes sense to try the job for a few days first. Maybe it's not such a great job for you after all! 3. To find out what you need to do to prepare for a job. Maybe you need to improve your fitness, or to study chemistry, or to aim for a particular university course. 4. To get a good reference. At the end of your work experience the employer will fill in an evaluation sheet on you. A good evaluation is worth its weight in gold, and some employers won’t even consider you if you haven’t done work experience! There are many other valid reasons for doing work experience including just finding out what the world of work is like. ![]() Your health and safety is of the utmost importance while you are on work experience. Before you go on work experience your employer should have agreed that any Occupational Health & Safety risks will have been assessed and managed, and that you will be given induction training when you arrive. You should go to the following websites to read about workplace safety and work through the games and/or tests. www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/default.htm. workcover.cadre.com.au/index_old.html www.safework.sa.gov.au/contentPages/EducationAndTraining/GamesAndTests/default.htm ![]() For Government Schools, The STUDENT PLACEMENT RECORD and SAFETY & EMERGENCY PROCEDURES - STUDENT CONTACT CARD can be downloaded by CLICKING HERE and then clicking on "Student Placement Record, 2005" or "Safety and Emergency Procedures - Student Contact Card (Revised 2005) - Sample" The nominated contact from school should be: Careers Adviser, Principal, or Deputy Principal. ![]() Work Experience at the Zoo
