Sydney Film School Festival

Twice yearly at the end of each semester and its production period, the Sydney Film School hosts the popular SFS Film Festival to celebrate the completion of the semester’s productions and the graduation of the 1-year Diploma students. Two days of student film screenings are a great opportunity for current and future filmmakers to come together.

The full house of general public (students, graduates, film crew members, their families and friends), actors, aspiring filmmakers, media and industry leaders is specially addressed by the keynote speakers chosen each year equally for their ability to inspire passion as for their insight into the realities of the film culture of Australia. The Festival also hosts Panel Discussions to educate the audience on a wide range of industry-related issues and to help the industry bodies make their role more widely understood in the community.

All sessions are FREE.

Please note: The films shown will all be prescreened by SFS staff. They have already screened 40 out of the 58 in total and have found them to be suitable for teenage viewing. Any of the remaining films which may be found unsuitable for high school aged students will have an announcement made at the start, so that parents/teachers/students will be forewarned. Of course, parents and teachers will need to make their own judgements about suitability too.

RSVP is necessary only for the final screening which will be followed by awards ceremony and will include the key note speech by Australian Director Ray Lawrence (of Bliss, Lantana & Jindabyne fame).

Wednesday July 14 starting 6.30pm.

Equipping Young People for Life

A unique educational program for young people will be revealed during a public lecture hosted by Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Wagga Wagga on Thursday 8 July. The ‘Putting Youth in the Picture’ (PYP) program was created by Queensland lawyer, Mr Adair Donaldson, to help local communities deal with issues confronting youth. "Our program uses a series of authentic but confronting movie scenarios to show how young people can become involved in life altering incidents as a result of poor decision making," said Mr Donaldson. Mr Peter Bell, of Student Services at CSU in Wagga Wagga said, "Charles Sturt University is extremely fortunate to be one of only two universities outside Queensland to deliver this impressive program."

Mr Donaldson will deliver the public lecture from 7pm on Thursday 8 July in the Convention Centre at CSU in Wagga Wagga.

Interested in Astronomy?

Pluto and the Ueber-nerds by Dr Fred Watson
When is a planet not a planet? When it's a dwarf-planet, perhaps? So what's the difference?
In an entertaining and fully illustrated journey through Pluto's eventful history, Fred Watson debates whether pragmatism and good science should prevail over sentiment and tradition.

Fred Watson says he has spent so many years working in large telescope domes that he has started to look like one. He is Astronomer in Charge of the Anglo-Australian Observatory at Coonabarabran, where his main scientific interest is gathering information on very large numbers of stars and galaxies. He is also an adjunct professor at the Queensland University of Technology, the University of Southern Queensland, and James Cook University. Fred is the author of "Stargazer - the life and times of the telescope", and is a regular broadcaster on ABC radio. His new book "Why is Uranus upside down?" is based on listener questions, and was published in October 2007 and won the 2008 Queensland Premier's Literary Prize for Science Writing.

NCVER Webinar Series

Work/Life interaction, skill development and utilisation in Australia
Presented by Professor Barbara Pocock, Centre for Work + Life, University of South Australia
Friday, 22 October 2010
12.30pm – 1.30pm AEDT

This presentation will consider how the changing nature of work and its interaction with life beyond work (including unpaid work, care and household and community involvement) affects workers' participation in vocational education. This will draw upon an Australian survey of employees conducted by the Centre for Work + Life in 2009.

The presentation will also consider factors that affect the skill development and utilisation of low paid workers' in the aged care, food processing and retail sectors in Australia. This will draw upon qualitative research recently undertaken in three Australian states.

It is hoped that the presentation will enable discussion about policy options that might help increase the skill development and utilisation outcomes of Australian workers in the context of their changing work-life situations.
