The 31 winning students from regional and metropolitan high schools were awarded for development and production of short videos that promote workplace information to their peers. Their teachers were also formally recognised at the prize-giving ceremony, which was organised around an Oscars/Hollywood theme to make it more enjoyable and entertaining for the participants. The Know the Deal competition aims to strengthen the knowledge of young people in NSW about what they should expect when starting work, helping to limit the risk of exploitation. The competition, now in its third year, requires students to create a short video highlighting important workplace issues based on content from the NSW Industrial Relations youth website - Young People at Work. It is a fun and creative way for students to learn about their workplace rights while engaging their peers and, importantly, meeting high school syllabus objectives. For the full list of competition winners and to view the winning videos, go to the Young People at Work website: http://www.youngpeopleatwork.nsw.gov.au/ http://www.youngpeopleatwork.nsw.gov.au/2010_Know_the_Deal_video_competition_winners.html ![]() ![]() Frequently Asked Questions from NSW Industrial Relations Here are 2 FAQs from the IR website which could be useful for young people looking for work over the holidays. The advice is from NSW Industrial Relations. Question: I've been offered a casual part-time job over the Christmas holidays but the boss says I have to come in for two days of 'trial work' before I actually start the job, to see if I can do it properly. Should I be paid for this trial work or is it considered unpaid training? Answer: Unpaid work trials are illegal in NSW. You should be paid for any work you do in your new job, even while you are learning. You must be paid for all of the hours you work during the trial period. Question: I work in a take-away shop, selling food and using the till all day. Last week when my boss added up the money in the till he said there was some missing. My boss then told me that the missing $11 would be taken out of my pay. Can he legally do that? Answer: No, this is illegal. Your boss can't take any money from your pay unless you have agreed to it in writing or it is required under the law, such as tax deductions Link to unpaid work trials: http://www.youngpeopleatwork.nsw.gov.au/Looking_for_work/Dont_get_conned.html ![]() ![]() Raffles College of Design and Commerce Holiday workshops: 10 - 14 January 2011 5 days of fun plus a valuable learning experience.
