Southern Cross University STAR students

Nearly 1000 prospective students have received an early offer to study at Southern Cross University in 2010.

The early offers, made through UAC today (December 10) and QTAC late last week, means those students don't need to wait until their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is released.

Admissions manager Ms Sarah Beresford said around 500 of the early offers made by Southern Cross University SCU were to Year 12 students as a result of a successful application through the STAR Entry Scheme, based upon their high school principal's recommendation.

The STAR Entry Scheme is available to Year 12 students in the region from the NSW Central Coast in the south, west to the NSW/SA border, north to the Darling Downs in Queensland and including the greater Gold Coast.

"We are very pleased to make offers early, giving students the opportunity to relax over Christmas and have time to organise their lives and prepare for their study in 2010," Ms Beresford said.

"For those who haven't received an offer, there is still plenty of time. Further offers will be made in the second December offer round via QTAC, just before Christmas, and the UAC preliminary round in the first week of January."

The main round of offers will be released on January 14 for QTAC and January 20 for UAC.

Ms Beresford said it was still not too late to apply for on-campus studies (late fees apply). To be included in the UAC main round applications must be made online by December 11. QTAC will accept applications online for their main round until 22 December.

"For anyone considering studying their degree by distance education, applications can be made directly to Southern Cross University and there is no charge. Our Direct Application Form can be downloaded from our website and applications are open throughout January and into February,″ Ms Beresford said.

"We aim to provide a range of flexible study options as we know that many people have to juggle various commitments."

Southern Cross University offers personalised campus tours, which can be booked at any of the campuses by phoning 02 66203975.

Information about courses and how to apply to SCU is available at www.scu.edu.au/studyin2010

Anyone with questions about their applications or changing preferences should contact student services on 1800 626 481.

Get ready for uni

At The University of Newcastle all the fees for bridging courses have been waived if you are a student starting study there in 2010.

Get a head-start on your studies next year, by enrolling in a bridging course. Bridging courses are like revision courses - students are able to brush-up on their academic skills and prepare for the semester ahead. They are designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need to be successful at uni.

Depending on the course, they run over two days – up to 15 hours worth of work and usually cost around $200 each.

Why would I need to take a bridging course?
Some degrees have assumed knowledge - these are subjects that you should have studied before starting your degree program. This means that teaching will begin on the basis that you have this assumed knowledge and University lecturers will not cover these subjects again. You can still apply even if you have not studied them, but you may want to consider a bridging course as study may be difficult without this background knowledge.

Recommended studies are HSC subjects that are related to your degree. While these subjects are not compulsory, you may find that they help you prepare for uni.

To help you with this, you will find info about assumed knowledge listed on our What Can I Study degree program pages: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/what-can-i-study/undergraduate-programs/

What courses are available?
Courses available include computing skills, mathematics, chemistry, physics, essay writing, report writing health sciences and academic survival skills.

Check to see if suitable bridging courses are offered at a university near to you.
