Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students - Sydney How Big Are Your Dreams? is a new but proven program for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We think of it as a dressing room where you can try on all kinds of ambitions and possibilities; an unfamiliar classroom where you learn by doing and experimenting; a stage from which you can tell stories that you care about; a tall ladder that offers fresh perspectives and new opportunities; and a warm home away from home where you will find a supportive network of young people like you, and adults who are committed to you. We invite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students in the Greater Sydney Area, their families and carers, and their teachers along for the ride. How Big Are Your Dreams? runs through the school year from January – December, 2011. It involves a monthly commitment. Please see program dates for more information. Who can apply? •Year 9 and 10 students How Big Are Your Dreams? is for students who live or study in the Greater Sydney Area; who show promise and commitment; who want to finish school and have an idea of what they might like to do afterwards; but who are looking for some extra support to help them to get there. •Parents or carers As a parent or carer, the young person’s journey will be your journey too – you are an important part of the program and we would like to know that you understand what this program is, and what your son or daughter is likely to experience and that you can support your child’s participation in it. •Staff and contractors We are also looking for talented staff and contractors to join our team. We run a small staff of Program Leader and three youth arts workers but we regularly add to our network of artists, technical specialists (web, design, film, animation, music, performance, production and music) and other professionals (human services, psychologists) to meet the needs of our participants. We work in mixed teams (Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff) and try to strike a good gender balance to support the needs of the young men and women in our program. The agreement builds on an existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two education organisations, which jointly addresses meeting education and training needs in a way that will support the development of the local economy, and the social and environmental well-being of the Mid North and North Coast regions. Southern Cross University Vice Chancellor Professor Peter Lee said the articulation agreement delivered an undertaking to grant specific ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) to North Coast TAFE students who have gained a Diploma or Advanced Diploma qualification. "Anyone with a Diploma or Advanced Diploma from North Coast TAFE will receive a very competitive ATAR ranking," Professor Lee said. "We have also agreed on clear advanced standing arrangements for North Coast TAFE qualifications, providing a clear pathway for students." Institute Director for North Coast TAFE, Elizabeth McGregor said the agreement identified a minimum level of advanced standing for the three top TAFE NSW qualifications. "Essentially, what that means is that North Coast TAFE students will be seen to have already successfully completed a certain number of units in a Southern Cross University degree in the same course area," Ms McGregor said. Professor Lee said this meant that Southern Cross University was providing graduates of NCTAFE programs at Certificate IV level and above with a six to 18-month head start in the related university program. "This partnership will allow North Coast students even greater access to higher education opportunities, and will certainly contribute to developing a more highly qualified population in Australia," Professor Lee said. Ms McGregor said that these articulation arrangements would be of enormous benefit to NCTAFE students, and would mean that more students will remain in the region, rather than leaving home for the metropolitan centres. "This will keep valuable knowledge and expertise here on the North Coast and help continue to build our competitiveness, sustainability and prosperity," Ms McGregor said. The structure of this unique Australian course provides a carefully constructed combination of modules, taught in regular classes to develop different skill areas and impart knowledge of the current musical theatre industry. By the end of the course, you will be able to move towards your own personal career aspirations and start auditioning for professional roles. The Cert IV is also a great foundation for further training. The entry for the Music Theatre course at ACTT is by audition. Anyone with talent is welcome to apply. The audition process can be highly competitive but at ACTT you will find it a rewarding experience in itself. Unlike some other institutions which get applicants in large groups to audition in front of a group and without individual feedback to help them improve, at ACTT we give EVERY APPLICANT private auditions, with personalised attention and considered feedback. We are here to help you and guide you through it with us. Music Theatre is the ideal program for singers and dancers who want to develop their acting technique and their overall music theatre ability, to prepare for roles in music theatre productions, or to successfully audition for higher level training. The course prepares students for the three essential demands of a career in the music theatre industry: Acting, Singing and Dancing – known in the industry as ‘The Triple Threat". At ACTT we see things a little differently… which is why we call our course the TRIPLE TREAT. The training is holistic, vocational and primarily studio-based, and draws upon the college’s strengths in voice, movement and acting to develop much more than these three individual skills. It is a finely tuned course to ensure that individual skills are brought up to the level necessary so performers will be much more than simply a singer, or a dancer, or an actor.
