The HSC Advice Line is a telephone service that provides course assistance and support from experienced teachers in 20 of the most popular HSC courses. The Advice Line will be open from Saturday, 17 October to Thursday, 5 November 2009.

Call the Advice Line on 13 11 12 (for just 25 cents) and give the operator your student number, the course name and a summary of your question. The operator will put you through to the next available Adviser for that course. During very busy or off-peak times, you may be placed on a priority queue for callback later on the same day. You can call the Advice Line during the afternoon or evening, as well as all weekend.

Zoo Work Experience 2010

Taronga Zoo's Work Experience program and Taronga Western Plains Zoo's Work Experience program are for school students who are interested in pursuing a career in Zoo-keeping, animal care or zoo horticulture. The programs are voluntary, unpaid and for school students in Years 10, 11 and 12.

One successful applicant per school will be assigned to a Zoo division for one week's duration (Monday through Friday), excluding school and public holidays.

Government stimulus to Kickstart Apprenticeships
The Rudd Government will invest $100 million in a new Apprentice Kickstart program to support up to 21,000 young Australians entering traditional trades this summer.

The new program comes as a result of the final Keep Australia Working Report released today, which included recent figures showing people starting trade apprenticeships had dropped by more than 20 per cent during the economic downturn compared to the same time last year.

"The Government’s Apprentice Kickstart will more than triple the first year bonus paid to employers who take on traditional trades apprentices this summer," Ms Gillard said.

"We’re boosting the commencement bonus from $1500 to $2350 and then following up with another $2500 at nine months which means employers will now receive $4,850 in the first year for taking on a traditional trade apprentice over the summer.

The bonus will be available for apprentices who are hired between 1 December 2009 and 28 February 2010 or until 21,000 apprentices have commenced in traditional trades hardest hit by skills shortages identified on the National Skills Needs List.

This includes trades like butchers, bakers, bricklayers, carpenters, electricians, hairdressers and pastry cooks.

780 new university places for early childhood teachers
The Minister for Education, Julia Gillard and the Minister for Early Childhood Education, Child Care and Youth, Kate Ellis, have announced 780 new university places in early childhood teaching.

500 new places will be available in 2010, with an initial allocation of 280 places in 2011. This builds on the 500 places provided in 2009.

Places have been allocated to higher education providers in the following states and territories:

•2010: New South Wales (185 places); Victoria (155 places); Queensland (60 places); South Australia (40 places); Northern Territory (50 places) and the Australian Capital Territory (10 places).

•2011: New South Wales (55 places); Victoria (50 places); Queensland (60 places); Western Australia (65 places); and South Australia (50 places).

	Charlie Perkins Scholarships (aimed at postgraduate study) to send Indigenous Australians to Oxford The Minister for Education has announced that the Government will provide $132,000 to the Charlie Perkins Trust for Children and Students which will give two talented Indigenous Australians the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford for up to three years. Ms Gillard said the Rudd Government was pleased to be able to provide assistance for the Charlie Perkins Scholarships which will cover living expenses, air fares and all tuition fees for the two scholars to commence at the University during the 2010/11 academic year. The British Government and Rio Tinto will also provide funding for the scholarships, for what the Charlie Perkins Trust believes will be the first Indigenous Australians to study at Oxford. This builds on the 500 places provided in 2009.
