Newcastle Uni Industry Scholarships

The University of Newcastle Industry Scholarship Scheme (UNISS) is an opportunity for students to make significant contributions to the work environment and at the same time experience the culture and ethics of the workplace. The UNISS program is usually structured so that students are either on placement with their Sponsor company or studying. This allows students to focus on one aspect of their program at a time.

One of the key elements of the UNISS Program is the one year full time placement with the Sponsor company. This gap year either occurs in third or fourth year, depending upon the length of the student's undergraduate program. During this placement, students take on a meaningful role within the organisation, undertaking all the responsibilities associated with being a practising professional. This intensive experience, combined with a world-class qualification from the University of Newcastle, provides UNISS graduates with an advantage in an increasingly competitive employment market. It is this unique combination of high academic standards and relevant, meaningful industry experience that makes UNISS the leader in preparing professionals for their role in industry.

UNISS scholarships are tax free and fully funded by industry.

Applications close Friday 8 October 2010

2010 Physics in Industry Day

Hosted by CSIRO - How will science and technology (and society and psychology?) determine the urban transport infrastructure of the far future? It's not about "green" energy/fuels - that's been done to death elsewhere. Assuming that propulsion has been dealt with, how will our urban transport infrastructure appear in a couple of decades or more from now? At the very least, the choice to speed will have been taken away with electronically governed cars, but will they fully drive themselves? Before you shout "No! Never!", think forward to my 70th birthday in 2037 when society may give me a choice: either get off the roads or buy a self-driving car. The ageing population could be the biggest driver in driving.

The program will explore the range of possible futures for cars as well as all forms of public transport.

Student Research Poster competition with $1000 first prize – be entertained by the ever popular "speed sell" session where each student promotes their research – in 60 seconds!!

When: Thursday 11th November
Where: CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering, Bradfield Road, NSW 2070

Registration opens 8:30am for 9:00am program start (sharp!)

New University Pathway replacing Distinction courses next year.

The NSW Board of Studies has announced that a new HSC-University Pathways program replacing Distinction courses commences at the beginning of 2011. The new program offers greater flexibility for highly able students to begin university study through a variety of delivery modes.

The program gives students who have accelerated in at least one HSC course and achieved high level results an opportunity to apply for entry to challenging first year university subjects. Students undertake study of a university subject concurrently with completion of the HSC. A broad range of subjects will be available, including Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Higher Chemistry, Higher Mathematics, and Foundations of Law.

The University of New South Wales, the University of New England and Macquarie University are delivering the program.

On completion of their university subjects, students will receive relevant university credentials and appropriate cross-university credit. The program is independent of the HSC and subjects undertaken will not contribute to the HSC pattern of study or to the ATAR.

The Distinction courses program concludes at the end of 2010.

$7 Million for Teacher's Scholarships in Areas of Need.

The Minister for Education and Training, Verity Firth, announced on 31st August that applications are open for 300 NSW Government teacher scholarships worth a total of almost $7 million. The Teacher Education Scholarship Program for 2011 will provide up to $23,000 each to students who agree to teach in hard to staff public schools for at least three years. "Scholarship holders receive financial assistance of up to $5,000 a year throughout their full-time studies, plus an additional $3,000 one-off grant when they begin their teaching career", said Ms Firth. Over four years (the normal duration of study) this amounts to around $23,000. "This is significant financial support for students committed to a future in our public schools as they work toward their teaching degree.Successful scholars are also guaranteed a permanent public school teaching position in an agreed location when they graduate."

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will get priority for up to 80 of the 300 scholarships.
