The Great Book Swap

Can you imagine going through life with the literacy skills of a six-year old? Sadly, this is a reality for many Indigenous Australians living in remote communities today. Being a reader is fundamental to learning and opens doors to the future. Now your school can help buy books and literacy resources for Indigenous children living in remote communities and make that future a reality for them by getting involved in the 2010 Great Book Swap and raising funds.

What is it?
The Great Book Swap is a simple fundraising idea. Students and staff donate one of their favourite books and pay a gold coin donation to swap it for someone else’s book.

When is it?

Make your Great Book Swap part of Children’s Book Week (21 - 27 August) or National Literacy and Numeracy Week (29 August - 4 September). You could also consider Indigenous Literacy Day (1 September). Or your school may choose to fundraise at any time throughout the school year. Be sure to register!

Macquarie University Rural Bonus Scheme

Macquarie University Rural Bonus Scheme
Macquarie University is committed to ensuring students have access to an outstanding educational experience and that their continuing education is not negatively impacted by social, financial or geographic disadvantage. As part of the University's social inclusion agenda, Macquarie is enhancing the Macquarie Lighthouse program, under the Education Access Scheme, by introducing an additional and complementary Rural Bonus Scheme (RBS).

The Macquarie University RBS will support students from rural and regional Australia by offering applicants bonus points, added to their ranking that determines an offer for a degree course. The Scheme is intended to support students whose primary residence has prevented them from accessing resources and support networks that are more readily available within the metropolitan regions.

How does it work?
The Macquarie University RBS has been developed from and informed by the Accessibility / Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA+). The ARIA+ is based on road distances to the perimeter of service centres. Depending on the remoteness of an applicant's primary residential home they will receive either five, seven or nine bonus points that can be used toward any Macquarie University degree.

Free public lecture: CSI misunderstood - do we really know what happens?

Last time we watched CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on TV, a murder was committed and solved in 60 minutes including the commercials. CSI is by no means a true depiction of what actually happens in the real world, so what DOES happen? Who gets called in to a crime scene? How is forensic evidence collected? Is it being collected reliably and in a timely fashion? What about evidence analysis? What is the turnaround time? What is the percentage of unsolved cases? Who are these people who collect and analyse the evidence? If so, what kind of training do they get? Do we give them enough credit for their work?

In this talk, experts from the NSW Police Force will touch on ‘real’ crime scene investigation processes underpinning recovery and analysis of forensic evidence, citing examples from Australia and the UK, challenges they faced both in the labs and on-site, and the evolving role of forensic science in preventing and solving crime. The talk will be introduced by UTS Professor of Forensic Science and Director of the UTS Centre for Forensic Science, Professor Claude Roux and include a panel of experts in the field.

N/B: Please be advised that there may be some material presented in this public lecture that is not appropriate for children under the age of 15 years. Children under the age of 15 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Date: 24 Aug 2010
Time: 18:30 - 19:45
6.00pm drinks for 6.30pm start; concludes 7.45pm

CSU launches Rural Medical Plan to remedy doctor crisis

Charles Sturt University (CSU) last week launched its $90 million plan to establish Australia’s third medical school based in rural Australia. The University will seek up to $90 million from the Federal Government to establish the medical school at CSU in Orange, as well as funding for an Integrated Primary Health Care Clinic at CSU in Bathurst. The University will also seek the support of the NSW Government to open additional clinical places for CSU medical students in NSW hospitals. The University will cooperate with metropolitan medical providers to ensure the programs work together to address the rural doctor crisis.

The Vice-Chancellor and President of CSU, Professor Ian Goulter, said, "A new rurally-based medical school is essential if we are serious about addressing the rural doctor crisis.

"The Rural Doctors Association has estimated that Australia needs 1 800 rural doctors today, and while there are currently more medical students at Australian universities than at any other time in our country’s history, it is clear that domestically trained medical graduates are not moving to rural practice in the numbers necessary to meet current or future demand.

"According to General Practice Education and Training surveys, less than five per cent of domestic medical graduates from Queensland and NSW universities have chosen to enter rural practice in the last 15 years.

"More than 60 per cent of Charles Sturt University’s rural on campus health graduates commence professional practice in rural areas."

The medical education program will be based at CSU in Orange with dentistry, oral health, pharmacy, clinical science, physiotherapy, rehabilitation science and distance nursing. This will allow CSU to use its existing anatomy, physiology, biology, pharmacology and cadaver laboratories at Orange in the medical program. The clinical experience program will be centred at CSU in Bathurst with paramedics, nursing, exercise science and psychology.
