University of Wollongong is running its second Engineering Summit for Young Women, to be held 11-15 January 2010

Re last week's article

This is a great event, aimed at girls from throughout NSW who are entering Year 11 in 2010 and who do well in maths and science, and who would like to know more about a career in engineering. At the summit they will undertake engineering activities, discover the various engineering disciplines available as a career, and hear from and spend time with female mentors who are currently succeeding in the engineering world and participate in a careers expo. Last years event was a great success with fantastic feedback from the girls who participated. Accommodation and full supervision is provided on campus. Assistance can be arranged for the cost of transport to attend the event. Any girl who is particularly keen but does not think she can attend because of financial disadvantage should still be encouraged to apply, as sponsorship may be provided.

Extra places have been announced so the closing date has been extended to 2 October 2010.

Academy of Dressmakers School Holiday Courses, Parramatta

MAKE YOUR OWN SHORTS
Students will get the opportunity to make their own designer shorts from scratch. Introducing flat pattern making and learning solid machine skills as they will be inserting zippers and altering the hem line. Don’t miss out on creating and then wearing your own design!

MAKE YOUR OWN A – LINE SKIRT
Students will get the opportunity to make their own A – Line skirt seen on the runways of Dior, Chanel, Armani. Starting from patternmaking, the student will able to resize their pattern also learning how to insert a yoke, invisible zip and blind hem

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
70 x115 cm width fabric or 1.4 m x 150cm width fabric.
1 x 20cm invisible zip (to match)

RECYCLE AND CONVERT YOUR JEANS TO A SKIRT
Students will get the opportunity to recycle their own jeans and convert them into a denim skirt (long or short) using denim thread and fell seams. As seen by Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Kirsten Dunst. The students will also have the opportunity to embellish the end result.

An old pair of Jeans – alternatively pick up an old pair from Vinnies or the Salvation Army.
2 x reels Denim thread/ upholstery thread (to match).

TYE DYE AND EMBELLISH
Students will get the opportunity to step back in time and embrace the flower power generation! Tye dye a pair of shorts, vest or wrap skirt for summer. Embrace your creativity and learn to embellish garments with trims and beading. (Interested applicants, please inform us of your size)

FASHION ILLUSTRATION
Students will get the opportunity to learn the 101 basics of Fashion Illustration. Learning different techniques and styles. The course will start with proportional basics, poses and garment textures. With a final fusion piece of illustration and montage. Creativity and style will be a requirement.

Industrial Technology recategorisation

Industrial Technology has been recategorised as a Category A HSC Board Developed Course. This recategorisation will be implemented for the 2010 HSC, so that in 2010 it can be included in ATAR calculations as a Category A course. Current Year 10 and Year 11 students should consider this recategorisation when choosing their subjects. UAC will send a letter to schools by the end of August advising of the change.




RTA Paraprofessional programs

Road designer in training
Road designers in training work full-time with experienced RTA designers while they study towards an Associate Degree in Engineering. Road designers in training use computer-based programs to help create strategic, concept and detailed designs for road projects such as motorways, roundabouts and intersections.

Traffic Operations Officer in training
This program gives participants the skills needed to support crucial operations in the RTA's high-tech Transport Management Centre. While studying towards an Electrical Engineering qualification, you will gain hands-on experience in managing the NSW road network. From special events planning and management, to assisting in analysing traffic flows, this is a challenging opportunity to work in an exciting and growing field.

Computer Systems Officer in training
In this program you will study Electrical Engineering while working with the Transport Management Centre to install, maintain and develop hardware and software systems. This includes working on the RTA's range of cutting-edge systems which control incidents and traffic, our network of closed circuit televisions, web-based systems and more.

Property Officer in training
Property Officers in Training will study towards an Associate Degree in Spatial Science (Geographic Information Systems) whilst working with the property services division at the RTA where you will gain experience in managing, acquiring and disposing of the RTA property portfolio and developing property solutions to meet client's needs and budget.

As an RTA Paraprofessional you:

Work full-time with a competitive starting salary of $39,759 and study part-time
Are trained by acknowledged industry experts and undertake diverse and interesting projects with support
Have your study fees paid
Have continued employment subject to satisfactory study and work performance
Receive paid time off to complete assignments or prepare for upcoming exams

THE STUDENT START-UP SCHOLARSHIP & THE RELOCATION SCHOLARSHIP

From 1 January 2010, all university students receiving income support will be entitled to an annual Student Start-up Scholarship of $2254 in 2010 and indexed thereafter.
The Student Start-up Scholarship will provide essential assistance to university students for the high up-front costs of textbooks and specialised equipment. All students receiving income support provided through Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY will also receive the Student Start-up Scholarship.
The Student Start-up Scholarships will be paid by Centrelink in two instalments at the beginning of each semester together with students’ income support payments.

University students receiving Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY who have to live away from the family home for study will be assisted by a Relocation Scholarship. This will be available to dependent students living away from home as well as independent students who are disadvantaged by personal circumstances.
The Relocation Scholarship will provide $4 000 for students in their first year at university and $1 000 in each year thereafter and will be indexed.

For most courses, you will be selected mainly on your academic qualifications.

For example, 2009 Year 12 applicants may be selected on the basis of their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent.

Some courses select applicants on the basis of additional selection criteria such as a personal statement, questionnaire, portfolio of work, interview or test. Other courses may use a combination of both academic qualifications and additional selection criteria. There will be a closing date for these additional selection criteria so check your courses soon!

This course will qualify you to work as an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse in hospitals, the community and medical Centres.
