Radio Excellence at CSU

Two Charles Sturt University (CSU) lecturers in commercial radio have been recognised for their dedication to developing a unique industry-based course that yields high levels of graduate employment in the radio industry.

Mr David Maxwell and Mr Brett Van Heekeren from CSU’s School of Communication and Creative Industries in Bathurst received Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) at a presentation ceremony in Canberra on Monday 9 August. The ALTC citation recognises them ‘For building an effective and sustained relationship with industry stakeholders to create an innovative learning environment for commercial radio students’.

"The ALTC award acknowledges the successful and ongoing partnership between the School of Communication and Creative Industries and the commercial radio industry, and in particular with the industry body, Commercial Radio Australia," Mr Van Heekeren said. "The Bachelor of Arts (Communication – Commercial Radio) we teach is the only course that specifically educates and prepares graduates for working in the commercial radio industry and related media. The key is the successful embedding real work into the learning strategy, resulting in nine out of ten of our graduating students being employed in the radio industry."

Mr Maxwell said, "Charles Sturt University has a strong brand in communication education because of how we teach and involve the students in the ‘real-life’ learning from day one. The result is that they are ready for work, highly employable, and they quickly rise through the radio business from ‘lower’ jobs to positions of responsibility."

The Sydney Gallery School

If your interests lie in Fine Arts, then you may want to look at what the Sydney Gallery School can offer.

Formally known as the Fine Arts Department at Meadowbank College, TAFE NSW - Northern Sydney Institute, it is now an extensive facility offering well equipped studio and workshop areas for specialist studies in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photomedia, Computer Imaging and other related Theoretical and Professional Art Practice Studies. A recent addition is the See Street Gallery, a large on site purpose built professional exhibition space which provides an effective interface between students, the public and the Fine Arts Industry.

Main Courses:
# The Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts
# The Diploma in Fine Arts
# Certificate IV in Fine Arts
# Certificate IV in Museum Practice

While the Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts is designed specifically to meet the needs of those wishing to practice as professional artists, graduates who wish to further their studies at a University are highly regarded and can gain up to two years advanced standing in Fine Arts Degree courses. This is an attractive pathway, as the student, after four years of training, is awarded both an Advanced Diploma and a Degree in Fine Arts while only paying one year of HEC's fees. The Sydney Gallery School provides a reliable alternative for students intent on a Fine Arts Degree who either choose this pathway or who initially may have missed out on a University placement.

Also, as part of the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE, students are able to exclusively participate in annual Art Awards valued at over $15,000, including:

* The Sydney Gallery School Paris Residency program.
* The Meadowbank College Association Art Award.
* TAFE Art and Design Prize.
* Various Industry sponsored awards.
