UWS to open more clinical schools in NSW

The University of Western Sydney will receive almost $10 million from the Federal Government to establish additional clinical schools at Bathurst and Lismore in regional NSW for UWS medical students.

This is in addition to $17.6 million already earmarked by the Federal Government for the UWS Blacktown Clinical School.

The new funding will allow the University to establish new training sites for UWS medical students in the Lismore and Bathurst regions and is part of a Federal Government initiative to expand the Rural Clinical Schools program.

The first students will have the opportunity to study from mid 2010, and will spend twelve months in these communities.

Bond University Film & Television Awards (BUFTA)

The Bond University Film and Television Awards (BUFTA) is a short film competition open to any year 11 or 12 secondary school student in Australia.
Students are encouraged to enter short films made as part of school assessments or as independent projects. There are a number of different categories for films to be entered into and winners are chosen for the most outstanding film in each category.
The Best Overall Filmaker will receive a full scholarship to Bond University, to study a Bachelor of Film and Television at the Centre for Film, Television and Screen-based Media, valued at $79, 200.

The Australian Student Mineral Venture

The Australian Student Mineral Venture (ASMV) is a series of vacation programs held annually throughout Australia. The ASMV is an initiative of The AusIMM Education Endowment Fund (EEF) and is open to high school students in years 10, 11 and 12. These vacation programs allow students to find out about careers, lifestyles and opportunities in the minerals industry and investigate university courses that would suit their abilities and preferences in terms of subjects such as chemistry, physics, mathematics, geology and biology.

The ASMVs are fully residential and supervised, with an ASMV Coordinator responsible for each Region's program. Students visit mine sites, university laboratories and other facilities, and have the opportunity to talk with graduates and industry professionals about courses and careers in the minerals industry, working conditions and prospects. Hands-on activities are emphasised, and student participation is required through various activities and projects. The ASMV programs highlight some careers that may be familiar to students and others that they didn't know existed.

Bradfield Senior College - A Different Option for Years 11 & 12

Celebrating over ten years of student service, Bradfield Senior College has established a unique Sydney-wide role integrating TAFE NSW qualifications, industry training and the Higher School Certificate.

A distinctive feature of the College curriculum is its on-the-job training program. Industry training places students in industry one day a week while they undertake their studies at the College.

Bradfield Senior College remains open for learning for 50 weeks of the year. The College day runs from 8.30am to 6.00pm and each class is two hours long. When students are not in class they are encouraged to make the most of the teaching and learning resources available. College vacations are at the same time as public school holidays.

Entry to Bradfield Senior College is by application and interview. The interview's main purpose is to support and counsel students in their subject selection and to determine their learning and vocational requirements.

Information sessions are held through out the year. These evenings provide an excellent opportunity for prospective students and their parents to meet staff and to speak with some of our students.

The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) has announced the speakers from the local games industry for Melbourne campus as part of their National Open Day on Sunday 16th August from 10am until 4pm.

As part of the program one of the industry speakers on the day will be the Art Director from Big Ant Studios, Adam Briggs.  Mr Briggs will be leading a discussion at 11am about what's needed to land a job in the games industry and give everyone a bit more of an understanding about what's involved in game development for next generation consoles.

Big Ant Studios, one of the many local studios employing AIE graduates, develop premium character action and racing content for platforms that include the Sony PlayStation2, PlayStation3, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox360, and PC.   Every console title developed by Big Ant Studios has gone on to sell multiple hundred thousand units and they are currently developing the Australian Rules Football game for the next-gen consoles which is due for release next year.

"It's really important that people wanting a career in games develop their skills through practice and training which is kept current with video game industry needs" said Mr Briggs, who has also worked in the Melbourne studios Transmission Games and Firemint.  "While being a lover of games is certainly beneficial, solid artistic and programming knowledge is a requirement to getting employment in the industry and crucial to development of products that are competitive in the current world market."

AIE is located on Level 8 of the Atari Building at 14 Queens Rd in Melbourne, and the Open Day offers a variety of talks and demonstrations designed to inform aspiring 3D artists and games programmers of the career and training options available.  AIE staff, students and graduates working in a variety of roles in the games and animation industries will be available will be to answer your questions and show you around.  Other studios expected to be available  on the day to chat with include Iron Monkey Studios, Infinite Interactive, Tantalus Media and EA.

REAL TV (ARTSTART 09) WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN AT RISK GROUPS

RealTV is an exciting FREE Arts & Skills workshop in multi-camera studio TV production for young people in "at risk" groups. This education program is initiated by Metro Screen on behalf of TAFE’s ArtStart NSW.

RealTV is a five-day workshop training young people in a range of multi camera television studio production skills and techniques including production skills, concept development, scriptwriting, camera operation, sound recording, vision switching and video sharing website broadcast. Participants will produce several short television programs that they will write shoot and broadcast.

The Dean of the Macquarie Law School, Professor Peter Radan, will be hosting an information evening for prospective law students and their families.

UNSW Aviation Open Days for Prospective Flying Students

An information session will be held for prospective Flying and Management students at the University of New South Wales main campus on Saturday 5th September.

Additionally there will be two open days for prospective Flying applicants at our Flying Operations Unit at Bankstown. These will be held on 19th September and 28th November between 1000 - 1300. A presentation will be given with a question and answer session on its conclusion. Guests will have an opportunity to meet our flight instructors and some of our current flying students. Our aircraft and simulator will be available for inspection as well.

Scholarships for Children of Veterans intending Tertiary Studies in 2010

In 2010 the Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) are expecting to give financial assistance for up to 65 students under many different scholarship schemes. All schemes help the selected children in need of the Australian veteran community with the costs of tertiary education. Applicants are considered for all schemes for which they are eligible.

Applications open on 18 August 2009.
To apply you must be:
a. Within the means test. That is eligible on assets and income grounds for Youth Allowance benefits for full- time education.
b. Enrolled, or planning to enrol in a full-time course of tertiary education in Australia by attendance at a
university, TAFE or college. The course must be of one or more academic years length and at undergraduate level.
c. The child or grandchild of a person who has operational service with the Australian Navy, Army or Air Force, or if not has three or more year’s continuous full-time service as a member of the Australian Defence Force.
d. Under the age of 25 when applying, unless exceptional circumstances related to veteran’s service exist.

The largest scheme is the Long Tan Bursary funded by the Australian Government. There are 50 new bursaries each year. They are valued at $9,000 each which paid at $3,000 per year for three years. There are selection number targets for each State and Territory. To apply you must be the child of an Australian Vietnam Veteran, be resident in Australia, be entering any year of tertiary study, having not previously received a Long Tan Bursary.

The other national schemes are the AVCAT Bursary, the two RSL Scholarships, three Vietnam Veterans’ Peacekeepers and Peacemakers Scholarship and the Defence Force Welfare Association Scholarship. George Quinsey Scholarships directly pay tuition fees for economics, commerce and accountancy studies. There are also regional scholarships. In NSW, there are three from Brisbane Water Legacy covering Gosford/Wyong NSW and two from the NSW TPI Association. Some private donors offer two scholarships to resident NSW applicants. In SA, the VVAA also offers a scholarship.

Schemes vary between $3,000 and $5,000 per year each. Some are restricted to location of residence or studies Most require veteran service in Vietnam but others are broader. Most schemes continue payments for later years of study. All scholarship schemes but one pays monthly instalments. That scheme helps with tuition costs for courses in commerce, economics and accountancy. One scheme is for indigenous students doing substance abuse or related studies. For this scheme there is no upper age limit nor a need to be related to a veteran. In addition to the above there is one grant per year to assist an handicapped eligible veteran’s child or grandchild with special extra costs of transition to tertiary studies or employment.
