Sydney Women in Engineering & IT (SWIEIT) Speakers Program

The Sydney Women in Engineering and Information Technology (SWIEIT) Speakers Program is jointly funded by the University of Technology Sydney and the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority to raise the profile of engineering and IT as options for study and career to young women in years 9 to 12. The program brings together undergraduates studying engineering and IT at UTS with professionals from NSW RTA for skills workshops before making team visits to schools.

Since its inception at UTS in 2001, the program has met more than 7000 students in high schools in Sydney and regional NSW. Speakers take a biographical approach and are able to interact easily with students in a classroom setting. A key objective of the program is to present information on engineering and IT in an attempt to demystify these areas of work and study, and to open up choices for girls to pursue. The program delivers an intensive schedule of team visits to schools from April until October. By filling out the online application form a team of UTS students and representatives of NSW RTA can visit your school to meet year 9 to 12 students. A minimum of one class period is needed for presentation, including questions and discussions.

Designing Fun for Teachers

The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) has launched a new program for Teachers taking Game Design one step closer to high-school classrooms.

This program has been tailor-made for teachers and includes units on how to integrate Game Design or Game Programming into an already existing curriculum. The course caters for teachers with a beginning, middle or high-level knowledge of game design and is streamed for specializations in either Game Programming or 3D Animation.

The program is heavily subsidized but still taught with the same rigor as all AIE courses.

Teachers who successfully complete the training will receive a Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) – Specialising in 3D Animation or a Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) – Specialising in Game Programming.

AIE's objective is to build and maintain a quality pathway of connected learning that can be joined at different stages and that fully meets the differing needs of learners. By exposing students to interactive technologies at high school, students will be much better equipped to deal with the rapidly emerging creative digital technologies that are being integrated in every creative industry from building to interior design to simulation and training.
