University of Canberra Principal's Recommendation Scheme

The Principal's Recommendation Scheme is an early entry initiative. This scheme provides current year 12 school or college students with an opportunity to secure an offer to the University during the UAC Early Round in December.

The University of Canberra recognises that an ATAR is not the best measure of a student's ability or determination to succeed at University. If a school or college Principal recognises that a student has the aptitude to go on to higher education, they can recommend that student to the University for consideration.

115 ACT students accepted an offer to the University through this initiative in December 2008 and in 2009, the success of the PRS became evident with 542 offers being made nationally from over 800 applicants for entry into 2010. The University is committed to offering the Principal's Recommendation Scheme to schools in NSW and across Australia.

Applications will be assessed on the strength of supporting information provided by the student's school, college or TAFE. An ATAR result is not required for entry via this initiative.

To apply students must indicate their University of Canberra course preferences on their UAC application. On-time UAC applications close on 30 September 2010. The recommendation form, signed by the student and the school, college or TAFE Principal must be returned to the University of Canberra Admissions Office by this date.

Forms and a letter explaining the initiative are being sent to ACT/NSW schools this month.

Good News from CSU

Enhancing higher education on North Coast

Students on the NSW North Coast can look forward to increased options and opportunities in higher education when TAFE NSW North Coast Institute and Charles Sturt University (CSU) sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding in Port Macquarie on Friday 23 July.

CSU’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Ross Chambers said the arrangement focuses on academic collaboration, including integrated programs that combine TAFE and university qualifications. "The agreement will increase the number and range of formal study pathways and articulation arrangements between the two institutions, which will allow students to complete a university degree without moving away from home," he said. Institute Director for TAFE NSW North Coast Institute, Ms Elizabeth McGregor said that the MOU would support Commonwealth Government initiatives aimed at developing a more highly qualified population in regional Australia.

The MOU allows greater collaboration in distance and online learning, the sharing of resources and facilities, and bringing knowledge and capability to help develop workforces for local government and businesses.

AND......

Expanding higher education opportunities

The pathway for rural and regional students in north east Victoria to pursue higher education will expand with the signing of a new agreement between Charles Sturt University (CSU) and Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (GOTAFE). A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed by the two institutions in Shepparton on Monday 19 July. Under the new agreement, GOTAFE students completing a diploma or advanced diploma in agriculture; equine stud management or equine performance management; or nursing will receive guaranteed entry and/or credit into related degree programs offered by CSU. In addition the degree program will be delivered at GOTAFE in Wangaratta meaning regional students will be able to further their studies without the need to relocate from the area.
