Joint Medical Program (JMP) - University of Newcastle

The Bachelor of Medicine - Joint Medical Program (JMP) capitalises on the University of Newcastle's highly respected medical program and the University of New England's strong rural standing and expertise of delivering programs in nursing, health and science. The program aims to produce medical graduates who are sought for their innovative thinking and are prepared for practise in rural, regional and metropolitan Australia.

The program emphasises the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for a career in medicine. It is orientated toward the diagnosis and treatment of individuals but also the promotion and maintenance of health in the community. Problem-based learning in small groups encourages independent learning enabling students to define their own learning needs and builds teamwork skills which are the foundation of successful health provision.

The JMP has a total of 170 Commonwealth Supported Places with 110 places at the University of Newcastle and 60 at the University of New England. Importantly, it is anticipated students are more likely to practice where they train, leading to an increase in the medical workforce and improvement of health services in rural and regional areas.

Students who wish to apply for the Joint Medical Program should already be booked into the UMAT. Late registrations for UMAT will be accepted (with a late fee) up to Friday June 18. Students also need to apply through UAC (Closes 30 Sept) and complete an on-line application which is not available until mid August. Please see your Careers Adviser urgently if interested.
