Antipodeans Abroad GapBreak

Antipodeans Abroad invites you to join their GapBreak program, a three-month volunteer placement in a developing country. You'll be challenged, discover new horizons and different ways of living while you work in a village school or on a community project. Teach English, build a classroom, work in an orphanage, with street-kids or on a conservation project. The work is fun and worthwhile.

Join one of their many groups of young Australians heading off throughout the year to start their adventure.

You'll live among local people in a developing country, tasting life in its simplest form. You will take a journey you never thought possible. The experience will change the way you think and look at the world.

This is a fantastic way to spend your first year out of school. Get a job, earn some money, do your three-month structured placement then go and see the world.

Major changes in commerce at the University of Newcastle

Accountancy, financial management and economics are at the very heart of all organisations and a degree in commerce offers you enormous scope and opportunity in a wide range of industries. Commerce graduates have career opportunities in a wide and diverse range of areas including; professional accounting, stock broking, financial planning, banking, management consulting and the public sector.

The degree has been redesigned to include economics and finance as majors alongside accounting. The Bachelor of Commerce will equip you with technical skills and a broad understanding of the modern day business environment. These skills are valued by all employers and it is no coincidence that 84% of commerce graduates from the University of Newcastle find employment within four months of completing their studies.

As a graduate from the accounting major, you can pursue careers in chartered accounting, public practice, auditing, tax, management, and accounting. Specialising in finance, you can go into a career in financial planning, international banking, investment management, treasury management and the money market. An economics major can give you a career in banking, treasury, department of finance and international financial organisations.

University of Sydney "Compass - find your way to higher education" program

A new University of Sydney program to encourage children from low socio-economic backgrounds to aspire to higher education from as early as primary school has been launched by Federal Education Minister the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, and University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence.

The "Compass - find your way to higher education" program is funded for three years by $3.5 million from the federal Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations; $2 million from the University of Sydney; and $100,000 from the NSW Department of Education and Training.

It will see the University of Sydney partner with the NSW Department of Education and Training and selected secondary and primary schools in Sydney. Together they will develop and run outreach, mentoring and professional development programs to increase school completion rates, and raise community expectations, student attainment and aspiration.

The Compass project will focus its attention on years 3 4 & 5 in primary schools and years 8, 9 and 10 in high schools. It will engage more than 1,200 students in the Kogarah and Marrickville regions in 2009 as it interacts with two secondary schools and six feeder primary schools. The program will expand into another eight schools in south-west Sydney in 2010.

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

In 2009, the Universities Admissions Index (UAI) for NSW and ACT Year 12 students is changing to the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Students should not be worried about any of the changes as they will have no impact on their current studies or choice of university courses for 2010.

With the new name there will be some minor changes that students, parents and teachers need to know about.

The number given to the maximum rank in NSW and the ACT will now be an ATAR of 99.95, as opposed to a UAI of 100.

This means NSW and ACT students will now be in line with their interstate peers, where the top rank is 99.95.

Achieving an ATAR of 99.95 is the same as achieving a UAI of 100 – a student receiving 99.95 is in the top ranked group of students.

The ATAR will indicate a student’s position in relation to the Year 7 students they began high school with. These changes have been introduced to achieve national consistency in the name and reporting of selection ranks. All states (except Queensland) will be introducing the name ATAR for their selection ranks over the next two years.

The rules for the ATAR are exactly the same as for the UAI. The scaling process will be the same, the rank order of students will be the same, and the same applicants will be selected for the same courses. Any small change in an ATAR compared to a UAI will see an equivalent change in the course cut-off.
