Careers in Mining Dinners

The mining industry offers diverse opportunities for professionals and skilled tradespeople. Miners are the highest paid workers in NSW, with average weekly earnings in May 2009 of $2,013, over $500 more than the second highest average wages earned in the electricity, gas and water supply sector. A career in mining is not just about working in a mine. Consider jobs as diverse as an environmental scientist, a surveyor, electrician, truck driver, computer technician, receptionist or geologist. A career in mining not only provides financial rewards, but also great job satisfaction being part of a progressive industry.

If you are a student in Years 10-12 or you are a parent or teacher of students in Years 10-12, you may wish to attend one of NSWMC’s Mining Careers Dinners. These dinners are a valuable appetiser for those considering enrolment in minerals related tertiary courses or for those who are still undecided about their career and/or university options.

The evening provides the opportunity to hear first-hand from undergraduates and graduates from mining related courses about their chosen career pathways, their experiences, both at university and in the industry and the variety of career opportunities available in the minerals industry, in NSW and globally. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of current students, graduates, university staff and representatives from local mining companies.

Dates and venues for the dinners are not yet published.

To request a booking form or to register your interest in attending a ‘Careers in the Minerals Industry Dinner', please email education@nswmin.com.au

For more comprehensive information about careers in the minerals industry, including job vacancies, traineeship and apprenticeship opportunities, and graduate and scholarship programs, please visit the Mining Careers website: http://www.miningcareers.com.au

Country Education Foundation of Australia

Young Australians living in rural and remote areas are as bright and ambitious as their counterparts living in Australia’s major metropolitan centres. However, the fact that they live outside public transport commuting distance of metropolitan centres causes them great difficulty when they are faced with the decision of what to do with their lives after leaving school. This is where the Country Education Foundation of Australia (CEFA) steps in. CEFA is a national not-for-profit organisation which assists rural and remote communities around the country establish local Education Foundations. These local foundations raise funds that are used to provide 'non-cash' grants to local youth to assist them with their transition from high school into further education, training or vocations.

Who can be helped?
The CEFA helps young people as they transition out of high school. They take applications from people who are leaving after Year 10, 11 or 12 and even students who have deferred university offers. Applicants must be under or including 21 years of age.

When do applications close?
Most local Education Foundations call for applications some time between October and December; however, each community has a different closing date.To find out the specific closing date of your local Education Foundation, refer to the application form or speak with your local Education Foundation contact person.

How do I apply?
To apply for financial assistance you must live or attend high school in a community that has a local Education Foundation. You will need to complete an application form. These are available to download from your local education foundation page.

A complete list of local education foundations can be found here: http://www.cef.org.au/foundations.html
