Elite Athlete Friendly Universities

Being an elite athlete used to mean giving up any semblance of a normal life. Training took up most of your days and for those skilled enough to be chosen for international events, touring took whatever time you might have had left. There was no way a university degree could ever be slotted into an already overflowing calendar. But now, just because you are one of the fastest or strongest at a particular sport does not mean you cannot also achieve academic success.

The Elite Athlete Friendly University (EAFU) program supports Australia's elite athletes to achieve academic excellence while also pursuing a sporting career. The value of combining both sport & higher education to achieve greater life success is well recognised across the university & sporting sectors. There are 36 universities across Australia that are part of the EAFU network.

NCVER Webinars

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER)  is hosting a series of "webinars" or "web seminars" throughout 2010. These one-hour presentations are free to attend and showcase recent research on a variety of topics. The next topic is:

Do wages matter, or the value of completing an apprenticeship or traineeship?
Presented by Tom Karmel, National Centre for Vocational Education Research
Tuesday, 15 June 2010
2.00pm – 3.00pm AEST

Summary: Low completion rates of apprenticeships and traineeships have been of concern for many years. Competing explanations have been the low level of apprentice and trainee wages on one hand, and other factors such as the quality of workplaces and training on the other. The focus of this presentation is on wages and the impact they have on the decision not to continue with an apprenticeship or traineeship.

To register for this event go to:

Hunter Region Apprenticeships

Parliamentary Secretary for Employment Jason Clare announced late last week that 1008 new apprentices have been recruited in the Hunter, as a result of the Rudd Government’s Apprentice Kickstart program. The program has boosted the recruitment of traditional trade apprenticeships above pre-global recession levels in just one year. The program will now be extended until November 2010.

Hunter employers are encouraged to take advantage of the extension of the program which triples the first year apprentice bonus to almost $5000.

"Apprentice Kickstart has been so successful it smashed its original target of 21,000 with more than 24,000 young people starting an apprenticeship in the traditional trades last summer," Mr Clare said. "Here in the Hunter, Apprentice Kickstart has increased the number of young traditional trade apprentices recruited by almost 20 per cent. During the 1990s recession, apprenticeship commencements in key traditional trades fell by more than 30 per cent and it took 13 years to recruit the same number of apprentices again. Through Apprentice Kickstart we have done it in one year, rather than 13. But we still need more apprentices. That’s why we’re investing almost $80 million to support around 22,500 new apprenticeship places in traditional trades experiencing skills shortages. This funding will be targeted at helping small and medium businesses with fewer than 200 employees put on more apprentices."
