Penrith Being Workwise Conference, 19 May 2009

"The 2009 ‘Being Workwise’ conference held at Penrith RSL on 19th May was a fantastic day, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of local business leaders" said Lynda Parigi from the Schools Industry Partnership. Year11 students from Glenmore Park, Cranebrook, Jamison, St Columbas, McCarthy, Blaxland, Penrith Christian, Wycliffe and Cambridge Park high schools worked together with ten local employers and employees to prepare Vocational, Education and Training (VET) students for their mandatory industry work placements in years 11 and 12. The conference was opened by Mayor, Jim Aitken, who praised the students for their initiative in completing a course where there are skills shortages.

Richard Eastmead from The Good Guys mesmerised students with his motivational talk from an employers perspective. Students had the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of employers including Richard Eastmead, Lisa Hodgskin from Penrith RSL, Danielle Welsh from Penrith City Council, Andrew Harvey from Thomas & Coffey, Allan Smith from Woodford Homes and Shane Simpson from Billy Baxter’s and My Cafe. Employers provided valuable information regarding their businesses and career prospects in their industries.

Chris Dowset from Thomas Coffey, Michael Todd from Penrith Valley Economic Development Corporation Ltd and Joel Gaylfoyle from Trevi spoke of their experiences after graduating high school and completing a practical industry skilled focused course either through TAFE or school. Students particularly enjoyed this session as the panel discussed career pathways they are experiencing only a few years after completing a VET course.

Students were quoted as saying ‘Richard Eastmead's talk about careers and working in retail was good advice and helped with decisions about the future’ and ‘I got a great understanding of work placement and how to be a better employee’. The Being Workwise conference gave valuable information to students to prepare them for their work placements and future employment.

UWS Your Show on TVS: ANGLE – ON AIR TUESDAY JUNE 2nd. 8:30 p.m.

Professional TV – Made by School of Communication Arts Students

Informative, revealing, and entertaining, ANGLE now brings good journalism – as seen in the ANGLE print magazine – to television.

ANGLE is made by students of the School of Communication Arts, with some contributions from community producers such as ICE (Information & Cultural Exchange) in Paramatta. UWS Students present the show and fill all technical roles; they research, film, and edit the stories - and they write all their own on-air texts. UWS students created intros and graphics, and a UWS student band contributes with its good-mood music.

ANGLE is a cross-disciplinary project, integrating PR and advertising students into teams created by journalism and media production majors. Students rose to the challenge of learning new and useful skills and took charge of promoting the show as production wound down.

The core crew of fourth year Bachelor Communication students and others enrolled in Learning through Community Service is supported by a number of interns and volunteers from other departments and schools at UWS.

Make sure to tune in to TVS on Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. (starting June 2nd), with repeats on Wednesdays 2 p.m. and Mondays 11:30 p.m. If you cannot get TVS analogue reception, tune in on the web at any of these times: the show is streamed live on www.tvs.org.au

Youth Allowance changes catch students short

Part of an article taken from WOTNEWS:

"While the Greens welcomed some aspects of the reforms, including the lowering of the age of independence to a more realistic 22 over three years, we hold some serious concerns over others," said Senator Hanson-Young. "Some students who have deferred commencement of university this year and entered the workplace in good faith that they could begin their study in mid-2010 will now find themselves ineligible for independence under the proposed measures in the Budget. "Under two of the work criteria of the previous system, students could work for at least 18 months in the preceding two years to qualify as independent and able to collect Youth Allowance.

This will change as of January 2010. "For students who are currently enjoying a ‘gap year’ before uni, as many young people do these days, these changes will mean they return home and to university without the financial support they were right to assume they were eligible to receive. "This will throw a serious spanner in the works for many young people who have planned for their future under long-standing arrangements for Youth Allowance eligibility, and hoped to undertake their higher education without having to study and work full-time.

"These young people are now faced with the prospect of working many hours a week on top of their studies to make ends meet, or dropping out of their place in higher education altogether."
