Interested in Dressmaking?

With the recent shift of clothing ‘Production’ to off shore companies, there is demand for Australian based dressmakers in several areas:  Australian Fashion Designers now need skilled workers to construct their samples for Production; clients require alterations to  variety of clothing purchased from stores; and individuals who still like to have garments ‘made to measure’ for that ‘special occasion’ need Home Dressmakers.

The Academy of Dressmakers is designed for those who are looking for an alternative to the current vocational training with a more ‘Practical Application’ approach where the Focus is "Garment Construction", with a small component of Design. They allow the Student to decide whether they would like to learn these skills for their own purpose and obtain a ‘Certificate of Completion’ with no assessments,
OR
Complete a Certificate II, III or IV in Clothing Production that is recognised by VETAB and other Fashion Design Institutes.

UNSW Sunsprint Challenge

The SunSprint Challenge is an exciting competition where high school students in NSW and the ACT team up to design, build and race a model car powered only by the energy of the sun.

Just like professional race teams, each student group works through the year to a special set of design rules and technical standards. Then all the teams come together on campus at the University of New South Wales over two days in September to race their creations against other schools. It’s a unique and fascinating way to promote teamwork and a really fun way to combine science, engineering, technology, mathematics and physics with creativity, imagination and manual skills.

2010 Prizes
Open Class
• 1st place: Certificate + Airfares to the national finals for up to 4 team members and a teacher
• 2nd place: Certificate + Airfares to the national finals for 3 team members
• 3rd place: Certificate + Airfares to the national finals for 2 team members
• Wildcard: Certificate
Novice Class
• 1st place: $200 + Certificate
• 2nd place: $100 + Certificate
• 3rd place: $50 + Certificate

It’s all about learning while you have fun. And it’s also about road safety: to successfully complete a race every car must carry a "driver and passenger" in the form of raw eggs. The challenge is to design and drive your car to keep the eggs intact: speed kills!  Students of all ages will love this event and Design and Technology students may use their entry as their final-year project.

How it Works
Eligible high schools each can enter up to two teams, with no more than four students in each team. If your team cannot travel to NSW for the event, you can even post your model car to us and a SunSprint official will race it for you. The competition has two classes: Open and Novice. Cars must be built according to specifications provided by the Australian-International Model Solar Challenge (AIMSC) released 3rd Feb 2010, visit the website for details.
