You can be certain about uncertainty… 19th May

Many of us start our working lives long before we leave school. We model our beliefs, attitudes, pattern of study and work on numerous factors surrounding us. We prepare ourselves both emotionally and psychologically for ‘life after school’. But what happens next? We start our journey only to find out somewhere along the way, that what we thought isn’t. Our perception isn’t reality. Even worse, that reality may no longer be a reality forever. So what do we do then? Do we change our hopes, dreams, goals and perspectives? Do we fall apart? Do we fade into the background? Or, do we adapt and move on?

For some of the readers, such a scenario can’t apply to them or their children; right? They have attended the best schools; achieved great marks; captained various sporting teams; become a great role model and community leader. Everything is going great. But, one day, that same person is involved in a car accident; their friend becomes gravely ill; they fail to hand an assignment in on time; their computer hard drive fails, erasing their thesis; their partner moves interstate; they experiment with drugs or alcohol; they lose ‘their way’.

Are all such scenarios possible? Do such incidents occur? Can one completely protect oneself against such possibilities? In every instance, you can be certain about uncertainty.

On May 19th, ParraSIP in consultation with Prof Jim Bright and a panel of industry and employment experts, along with young people will be exploring various life scenarios and asking "what can we do now?" This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to develop their knowledge about the options and opportunities available when events in life go ‘wrong’ or ‘right’.

Digigirls

Due to the reported decline in girls undertaking InformationTechnology, Vocational Education and Training subjects in schools in a climate where boys participation has been on the rise, a program was needed to promote ICT to girls, provide much needed career information, and address their reported negative perceptions of the industry.

The Digi-Girls Program was developed as a response to these issues within a partnership between the then Ryde District Office and Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE NSW. NSI now runs the program spread across a broader range of techologies.

Digi-Girls has targeted girls from high schools in the Northern Sydney Region for some years mainly attracting girls in Year 10 but the program has also included girls in Years 9,11 and 12. Co-educational schools were specifically targeted to provide girls with a different leaning environment in order to accelerate their interest and skills in Information Technology, as it was considered it was these girls ‘who were doing it hard’. The program now also includes girls from single sex and non government schools.

Currently a Digi-Girls Program is run over two days culminating on the second evening with a presentation of the work the girls have done to parents and school representatives.

The girls are taught by IT professionals with teaching qualifications who are specialists in their field.  The girls are presented with a great deal of learning very quickly to get them feeling confident about their new skills for the presentation.  There is a section of the program detailing the career possibilities of their new skills and a session with role models from the industry.

11 June 09

Berrigan Shire Council has organised and successfully held the Local Employment Expo (at Finley High School) five times, and has received significant support and positive feedback from the local community. The expo provides an opportunity for students to find out more about local job opportunities and relevant education pathways. The day also involves institutions, business and services setting up stalls in the hall for students to visit. This is a one stop shop equipped with information about how to find a job, what students need to do once they find a job, what training may be required, information on apprenticeships and traineeships, and practical skills required in the workplace. The afternoon of the expo is enjoyed by the entertainment of a motivational guest speaker, which you are welcome to attend. If you would like to be involved in either hosting students to visit your business or setting up a stall in the hall please contact the Berrigan Shire Council as soon as possible.
