UTS Careers Advisers Day 11 March 2009 - a short report.

UTS is aiming to be not just an Australian, but a world leader in Technology.
They are proud of their "whole university integration", meaning that they work as a team rather than in seperate faculties.

This is most obvious in their new Bachelor of Global Studies degree.
The very successful combined degree in International Studies has now been running for 12 years, but the Bachelor of Global Studies is in its first year with 37 students.
This degree focuses on learning about the global political, economic and cultural processes, institutions and theories involved in a particular area of interest. Students are able to draw connections between these global phenomena and concrete local practices in work and life, seeing the different opportunities and constraints that exist for different groups of people. The course requires students to be able to engage in complex problem solving regarding global phenomena from several different perspectives.
Career options exist in globally oriented workplaces which may include international advisory and management positions in governmental organisations such as foreign affairs or the UN, non-government agencies, and companies that operate globally.

There was a very interesting presentation, showing one type of technology at UTS, by a student who had developed a control for a wheelchair that worked by the occupant telling the chair which direction to move using brainwaves.

A presentation by a Global Exchange officer showed the variety of opportunities for visiting other countries while completing your studies. UTS has over 100 partner universities around the world.

Furthering the university's integration theme they have the slogan "Where creativity meets technology" and they are about to go online with a new website: www.2worlds.uts.edu.au
They would like careers advisers to have a look and give them feedback before they launch the site.

On Tuesday 17 February, the Federal Government announced UTS as the headquarters for the new Creative Industries Innovation Centre (CIIC). One of six centres forming the Australian Government's Enterprise Connect initiative, CIIC will be located at UTS’s city campus, just a few kilometres from the head offices of 39 per cent of Australia’s creative industries, 70 per cent of the major international creative IT companies, and most of Australia’s banks.
Receiving $17 million of federal funding over three years, the centre aims to increase the competitiveness, profitability, productivity and innovation of Australia’s creative industries.

Date: Tuesday, 17 March 2009
Time: 10.00am - 2.00pm
Location: Level 3A Concourse Building 1

Our stands are staffed by representatives from UTS partner universities including students and staff so they can tell you first-hand about what it's like to live and study in their country. The UTS Global Exchange team will be there to help you identify exchange destinations that may be suitable for your degree and help you find out what you need to do to apply for exchange in 2010 and beyond.

Most countries and many major partner universities will be represented at the Fair.

Coaster Design Competition Closing Date 20 March 2009

Most Australian adults have a bet at some time, whether it's on Lotto,
the Melbourne Cup, or on gaming machines. But for some, gambling can become a big problem that affects not only their own life, but the lives of their families as well.

Responsible Gambling Week 2009 is being held on May 11-16. During the week, clubs, pubs across NSW, the casino and the NSW Government are getting together to educate people about what problem gambling is, how it can affect people, and where to go for help.

But we need your creative genius to do it!

THE CHALLENGE

Your challenge is to create an artwork that educates people about the impact of problem gambling on families. What makes it an even tougher challenge is that your artwork must be no bigger than 95mm x 95mm – the size of a drink coaster used in pubs and clubs.

Eleven regional winners will each win an 8 GB iPod Touch. They will then become finalists in the state-wide competition.

The overall state winner will also receive an Olympus E520 digital SLR camera worth almost $1,000. They will have their artwork printed on 100,000 coasters and distributed to pubs and clubs state-wide to help educate people about responsible gambling.

The judges will be looking for entries that:

  • Gambling venue patrons will be able to understand at a glance
  • Are unmistakeably about the issue of problem gambling.
  • Educate people on the signs and symptoms that they should look for that might indicate their gambling is a problem.
  • However, the judges WON’T be favouring any artwork that is violent, offensive or which contains bad language.

Learn about the signs of problem gambling here.

CSU Single Subject Study and open entry

CSU's new single subject study and open entry program is designed for students who want flexible study choices. Perhaps you don’t want to commit to a full-time degree. You might want to test the waters of higher education before you decide which area of study is right for you. Or you may just want to update your professional qualifications in a specialised area.
For those of you concerned about entry requirements, many single subjects are open entry – which means there are no prerequisites for study.
Whatever your reason, you can choose to study just one subject, either on campus or through our online supported distance education program. As Australia’s leading provider of distance learning and a well-respected university, we’ll provide you with all the support you need to succeed in your studies.
You can build your single subjects up to a degree, or you can just focus on one area that appeals to you.
No matter where you are, what you do, and what you want to achieve, you can make it happen at CSU.

VETiS Competitions

The WorldSkills Australia VETiS competition is a challenge. A challenge to be the best in your skill area! Competitions aim to test your skills against those of your peers. It will inspire you to be the best you can be and one day of competition will see how well you know your skills.
The first level of VETiS Competitions can be held within schools and colleges. Competition projects are aligned with Certificate I/II in relevant National Training Packages and can be coordinated by teachers and completed within class as part of an assessment.
The top students from the in school competition may then continue the cycle at a regional level and possibly the national level.
Once they have left school some students continue the WorldSkills competitions as an apprentice or trainee and can receive prestigious scholarships or compete for Australia at the WorldSkills International Competition.

Applications for Regional Competitions are available on the website: www.worldskills.org.au

BUSINESS CADETSHIPS CANCELLATION

Due to further deterioration in the global economy, two of the Program Companies are now unable to definitely place cadets under the 2009 Business Cadetships Program.

This sudden change reverses the commitment that Program Companies had made to the 2009 Program and renders it unviable. Unfortunately the 2009 Program is now cancelled.

We would be grateful if Careers Advisers would take the following action:

·       let your Year 12 students know that this year’s Program has been cancelled
·       advise them that the Program Launch on 27 March will not occur
·       take down any promotional posters that you may have posted at your school

Over the last two years the Business Cadetships Program has been extremely successful, with over forty cadets placed with leading companies in the banking and finance sector. Professional Cadetships Australia will remain afloat as a company so that when the global economic situation improves, we can resume the Business Cadetships Program.

Thank you for your support of the Program to date. We apologise for any inconvenience that cancellation of the 2009 Program may have caused.
