News from Sydney Institute of TAFE

BBM Scholarship Winner

A prominent partner of Worldskills Australia is the Big Brother Movement (BBM) which is an International pathway program for national competitors to further their experience, growth and development.

An extract from a Worldskills Australia newsflash states:

BBM Awards have enabled hundreds of talented young Australians to visit Britain to gain further experience in their chosen pursuits. BBM aims to provide career and skills support to the youth of Australia. Its awards have become a highly respected and beneficial international pathway from WorldSkills Australia's National Competitions.
BBM recipients from the WSA National Competitions have each proved their dedication to skill excellence in their chosen vocational field. The young Australians travel to the UK to participate in a two week Corporate Leadership Development Program where they test the limits of their mental and physical boundaries in tasks such as an expedition to the hills of North Wales and a sinking ship simulator.

At the 2008 Worldskills National Competition at Darling Harbour, Blake Conyers from Sydney Institute (Sydney Region) competed and achieved an excellent result of second place. The narrow margin away from the gold medal was just one point.

This year a wide range of national competitors from various trades across Australia went into the running for the BBM scholarships. Amongst this group were Blake and the Gold medal winner of the Signcraft category Josh Tunbridge from the Illawarra region.
It is with great pleasure to pass on the excellent news that not one but both Signcraft applicants were granted a BBM scholarship. Blake and Josh will be off this year to Britain to undertake the BBM program and also stay up to twelve months undertaking work experience at an Industry workplace.
We wish both Blake and Josh the best of luck and enjoy this experience of a lifetime.

Indigenous Cadetships at University

An Indigenous cadetship at the University of Sydney is a great way to receive the hands-on training and mentorship you need to boost your confidence and practical knowledge in your chosen field. Ultimately, cadetships provide you with paid work experience that will assist you on your career path.

The Indigenous Cadetship is a paid training program for students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who are enrolled at any Australian university in an undergraduate degree.

You’ll undertake a meaningful work program in a faculty or school that is aligned with your area of interest or study. Cadets typically work at the university one day per week, as well as two weeks full-time per year, however, your schedule will be flexible and tailored to fit in with your study.

You can apply for this cadetship if you are currently enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree at an Australian university. You will also identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted as such by your community.
