School Holidays - Engineering Challenge Update.

Engineers from Penrith and Blacktown Councils, the RTA, Army, UWS and TAFE are volunteering their time to run the engineering fun day at Nirimba TAFE on the 22nd April.

Engineering has been a persistent skill shortage area for many years and many teenagers are unaware of how many different types of engineering occupations are available.

"This is a great school holiday activity for teenagers looking for something really interesting to do during the school holidays, and no doubt the certificate will look great on a resume" said Cheryl Kitto, Regional Industry Careers Adviser for Western Sydney.

The event has five challenges from materials destruction testing, to computer aided design. Other activities include surveying, designing bridges, making models and problem solving out in the field with Army engineers. Real engineers will help the teenagers learn and have fun every step of the way.

The ultimate goal is for students to consider engineering as a career path for the future.

The event is being run during the school holidays so we can gain full access to the engineering facilities at Nirimba TAFE, which is close to Quakers Hill train station.

The event is free, but a pizza and salad lunch is available for $10. Teenagers of all ages are welcome.

To book or further information please call Ian Palmer at the Schools Industry Partnership on 4725 0310 or ian@schoolsindustry.com.au

Opportunity for high school students to study pulsars

Parkes radio telescope is now calling for applications from schools for an observing slot in the PULSE@Parkes program from May through September 2009. This free program allows students in Years 10-12 to control the iconic Parkes radio telescope remotely to observe pulsars. They then analyse their data to determine some pulsar properties. They also interact with professional astronomers and learn more about observational radio astronomy.

The project development phase ran from late 2007 through to March 2008. The first test involving Year 10 and 11 students from Kingswood High School in Sydney took place successfully on December 4, 2007 with the second test, with Muswellbrook High School on 13 February 2008. In each case students took control of the Parkes radio telescope via the internet from ATNF Headquarters in Marsfield, Sydney and observed several pulsars.

Schools are now able to apply for an observing slot to use the telescope. Initially observations must be carried out from ATNF Headquarters at Marsfield in Sydney although we hope to be able to offer other remote observing stations elsewhere in Australia later. Observing sessions will be be about two hours in length.

For details and an online application form please visit the project website at: http://outreach.atnf.csiro.au/education/pulseatparkes/
