If you love Astronomy, you'll love Pulse@Parkes

Here's an amazing opportunity to control the Parkes Radio Telescope and do REAL science in REAL time to make REAL discoveries!

PULSE@Parkes is an innovative project that provides high school students the opportunity to control the famous Parkes radio telescope. Students observe pulsars under the guidance of professional astronomers.

The data you obtain can be analysed to try and determine a number of properties of the pulsars, the post-supernova remnants of dead stars. Your results feed into a growing database used by professional astronomers. You may discover a new pulsar or help determine the distance to existing pulsars. You can help monitor them and identify unusual ones or detect sudden glitches in their rotation. Through participating in this project you will meet professional astronomers, learn how to control a state-of-the-art telescope, experience some real science and share your work with students from other schools.

The data you collect will also used by the astronomers for ongoing research. Astronomers from the CSIRO Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) use the data to track the evolution of the pulsars over many years, to test Einstein's theory of gravity and hopefully find gravitational waves.

PULSE@Parkes observing slots – Open for Application
CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science are now seeking applications from schools that wish to take part in a PULSE@Parkes observing slot from April to September 2010. There is one slot per month available for student exploration of pulsars under the guidance of professional astronomers using the Parkes radio telescope. Talk to your Careers Adviser.

Apply online at: http://outreach.atnf.csiro.au/education/pulseatparkes/application.html

If you have any further queries or wish to know more about the project contact Rob Hollow on robert.hollow@csiro.au.

Australian Gemini School Astronomy Contest: 2010 details

This year, high school students in Australia have a chance to use an hour of observing time on one of the world's largest optical telescopes, the 8-metre Gemini South telescope in the Andes Mountains of Chile. How? By picking an object in the Southern sky and writing a winning explanation of why it would be interesting to digitally photograph. See the website below for more contest details and keep checking the news page for updates on the contest progress and for the latest exciting discoveries announced by Gemini.

How to Enter
In one page, explain why your selected target would be a good choice to be imaged by the Gemini South Telescope. Justify your answer with reasons of scientific interest and visual appeal. Download the entry form from the website where you will also find details of where to send it via email, fax or mail..

Entries must be received by: Friday 7 May 2010

Entries may be written individually or in groups, but must be submitted by a high school teacher. Limit of two entries per high school. The contest is open to any Australian high school-level students, as well as inter-school groups and clubs of high school students, provided each entry has a clearly designated submitting high school and teacher. The website gives detailed information about how to enter as well as some tips. It is very important that you read these and speak to a teacher before entering the competition.

What You May Win
The best-ranked entry will have their object imaged by Gemini. The professionally processed picture will then be presented to the school by astronomers who will explain what the image reveals about the target. The classes for the top three entries will be eligible to participate in a Live From Gemini program, an introduction to the Gemini telescopes provided via a video link to experts in one of the Gemini control rooms.

Contact Info
For further inquiries, please contact Dr. Christopher Onken of the Australian Gemini Office by e-mail at geminicontest@mso.anu.edu.au  or by phone on (02) 6125 8039.
