Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarship (RAMUS) Scheme

Scholarships for rural students studying medicine

The RAMUS Scheme is funded by the Australian Government and assists selected students with a rural background to study medicine at university. In addition to their rural background, RAMUS scholarship holders are selected on the basis of financial need and demonstrated commitment to working in rural Australia in the future.

The Scheme is aimed at attracting more doctors to rural and remote Australia. The RAMUS Scheme supports a total of 573 current scholarship holders. About 100 new scholarships are awarded each year through a competitive application round, to maintain the total of 573.

RAMUS scholarship holders receive $10,000 a year during the completion of a standard medical degree at their chosen university. This financial support assists scholarship holders to overcome the financial barriers to studying medicine at university, particularly the costs of moving and living away from their family support structures.

Applications for 2011 will open on 9 November 2010 and close on 17 January 2011. Late applications will not be accepted.

The Application Form and detailed Application Guidelines for 2011 will be available on the website in November: http://ramus.ruralhealth.org.au/applying

Opportunity for high school students to study pulsars

PULSE@Parkes is an innovative project that provides high school students the opportunity to control the famous Parkes radio telescope. Students observe pulsars under the guidance of professional astronomers.

The data you obtain can be analysed to try and determine a number of properties of the pulsars, the post-supernova remnants of dead stars. Your results feed into a growing database used by professional astronomers. You may discover a new pulsar or help determine the distance to existing pulsars. You can help monitor them and identify unusual ones or detect sudden glitches in their rotation. Through participating in this project you will meet professional astronomers, learn how to control a state-of-the-art telescope, experience some real science and share your work with students from other schools.

The data you collect will also used by the astronomers for ongoing research. Astronomers from the CSIRO Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) use the data to track the evolution of the pulsars over many years, to test Einstein's theory of gravity and hopefully find gravitational waves.

Initially observations must be carried out from ATNF Headquarters at Marsfield in Sydney although we hope to be able to offer other remote observing stations elsewhere in Australia later. Observing sessions are usually two hours in length.

Applications now open for October 2010 semester: There are four remianing slots available from October 2010 to February 2011.

21 Ways to Find an Apprenticeship

When looking for an apprenticeship, most school leavers only look in the paper or on the internet, but these are far from the best places to secure an Apprenticeship or Traineeship. It is well known that approximately 80% of positions vacant are never advertised. Of course your success will depend upon the job market in your chosen trade and suburb, the time of year you are looking and how you compare to the other applicants. Luck plays a part too, but far more important will be your effort, technique and persistence. Also, make sure every application is customised for the job and delivered with enthusiasm.

Another huge mistake often made by school leavers is to only apply to one employer and then wait to see if they are successful before submitting the next application. It is strongly recommend that you actively pursue as many strategies and applications as you can manage to squeeze into your day, every day. Many large organisations are already recruiting their apprentices for 2011, so start your research now.

The Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury Schools Industry Partnership has a wonderful resource on its website called "21 Ways to Find an Apprenticeship", which may help you to be more effective in your search.

Against the odds: Influences on the post-school success of 'low performers'

The link between academic achievement and labour market outcomes is well established. But how well does a student's achievement in a test predict their later success in life? A newly published study examines this question, with 'success' considered to encompass satisfaction with life together with the extent to which young people are fully occupied with education, employment or a combination of these. Low performers in mathematics in the 2003 Programme for International Student Assessment were the focus. The study found that 'low performing' status has little impact on future success. Further, students who saw the value of mathematics for their future success were more likely to achieve this success.

Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor’s Annual Debate

Higher education has never been so popular. Around the world young people are flocking to universities in the hope that a degree will propel them into the best jobs available. It is has been estimated that over the next 30 years Australia will need to build around 24 new universities and recruit some 26,000 extra academic staff in order to cope with the demand for a university place. Learn more about working with children and young people

If you work with children or young people and would like to build on your knowledge and skills, new courses on offer through Southern Cross University could be for you. Beginning in November this year, the new Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Childhood and Youth Studies courses incorporate the latest research to help those working with young people update and expand their skills.

Professor of Childhood Studies at Southern Cross University, Anne Graham said the qualifications would be useful to professionals from a range of backgrounds. "These courses have been developed in conjunction with leading national and international experts who bring a wealth of scholarship and practical experience in relation to children and young people, including how they can best be supported to reach their fullest potential," said Professor Graham. "Students will develop knowledge and skills from a number of disciplines to assist them in their work, which we believe will lead to better services and outcomes for children and young people. The skills learned will be applicable in a wide range of contexts and could be useful for case workers, family dispute resolution practitioners, lawyers, teachers, youth workers, health professionals, government policy makers or the police, to name a few. We think this diversity of professional interests is an exciting aspect of the course as it will give students the opportunity to network with course participants from various fields including education, law, psychology, health, family services and community development."

The Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master of Childhood and Youth Studies are all offered by distance education with online interaction and guest presentations. Most units involve an optional summer and/or winter intensive workshop, normally held at Byron Bay, when students and lecturers will meet face-to-face.
