There are some simple and fun strategies that students can use to start experiencing careers and work-life that will enhance their self understanding and help them start on their career paths now. These strategies are tried and tested by successful young professionals today. You can help connect students with these opportunities and tips to help build their success. It’s all about trying new experiences. Of course anything new can be both exciting and scary, but they will learn great skills and have a heap of fun at the same time. Here are some great tips for our students. • Volunteering: this can be informal or formal!
- This is THE best way to learn about yourself and your skills, your interests, meet new people and build very powerful skills as well as build your portfolio of experiences.
- There are so many avenues of volunteering available, you just have to ask yourself what your interests are and you can probably find a volunteering opportunity to involve yourself in.
- Volunteering also helps you to try out a certain interest, and see if you actually really enjoy it as a possible career. Students can explore volunteer possibilities through the MHSCareers.com website. If unsure check with Mr. Baird.
- Join your local council’s youth committee and help organise events for young people while meeting cool local youth
- Contribute to your favourite charity or organisation
- Do anything from write articles for e-zines to provide some reading help for youngsters
- Volunteering is great for networking too – you will make some great contacts who can then help you find a job in the same area when you are ready for that next step.
Greg Baird, Careers Advisor ![]() ![]() Careers Forum 17th March Students in years 9 and 10 completed a session covering their Career ABC’s The content of this session that was conducted by the Frank Group consisted of the following topics:
A – Anything’s Possible
Inspiring students with stories and guessing games the presenter revealed the first jobs
of some well known celebrities and how they created their career success. The
importance of defining your own success was discussed and students saw that there was no
one path that guarantees that success.
B – Become Aware
Students were challenged to become aware of the current career statistics to ensure they are
prepared for the global workforce today. Through a short activity students were then
shown how important it is to become aware of your interests and possible combinations
of these to discover possible paths. Then through a skills audit that each student will
complete they became aware of the employability skills that employers are looking
for. Two key skills of innovation and teamwork were tested with a few students getting
involved in a short challenge.
C – Creating Opportunities
We know that things are never handed to us on a silver platter, we must go out and find
opportunities ourselves. Students learnt the key skills and ways of creating opportunities for
themselves so they could start helping themselves and working on building their
employability skills. These opportunities include volunteering, work experience, research, casual work,
sports and others. They learnt about all of the opportunities available to them to learn skills, develop
interests and see possible pathways, as well as meeting people who will help them on their
way. Students will be challenged to identify strategies that they can use now. ![]() The new web page for Careers can be accessed in two places:

Dear Parents of Years 9 - 12
In this letter I set out details of the careers program for 2008. The aim for this year is to provide experiences that will be specific to the needs of each year. The intention of the program is to provide interesting and relevant experiences that will facilitate understanding of individual career paths.
Internal Careers Program (Year 9)
This year we are refining the process so that Year 9 will have a unit within their English Program that will assess their skills in ‘language in the workplace’ including the creation of letters of application and resumes.
Students will learn about interview techniques and will be assessed on their oral language style in this situation. We will also have a school visit by ‘The Frank Team’ who specialise in workshops designed to encourage students to fine tune their career goals.
Students will also be involved in self assessing their interests and aptitudes to refine these so that they will be able to start thinking about possible Work Experiences in Year 10. To facilitate the refining of career goals students will be interviewed by myself during terms 2 and 3.
Work Experience (Year 10)
Students in Year 10 will have the opportunity of work experience in term 4. There will be two weeks of work experience this year and students are invited to start looking for relevant experiences now. Students will be interviewed in the coming weeks in order to help them refine their career goals so that the experiences that they choose will be worthwhile and will be beneficial in helping students choose a career path. Please note that the first week will be common and the second week will run alternatively with Work Camp. More information will be provided at the Key Parent Function. Dates for this are as follows:
Careers Information Nights (Years 10-12)
Careers Information Nights for a number of years have been organised by the Redfield Oldboys Association as a service to Years 9-12 students. These nights are compulsory for all Years 10-12 students. A roll will be taken.
The evening focuses on University and TAFE study options and features a wide variety of ‘oldboy’ speakers.
The evening features a wide variety of ‘oldboy’ parent speakers and other guests talking about what they like about their work, what it involves, and its requisite qualifications.
Careers Interview Program (Years 10 & 12)
The Careers Interview Program for students in Years 10 and 12 is to be conducted on the following nights:
The aim of the Interview Program is to encourage students to think seriously about career options, to enable them to develop competence in maintaining an up-to-date résumé and to equip them with good interview techniques. Consequently, the program involves each student being interviewed by a panel in regard to a job advertisement for which he has personally chosen to apply.
Prior to the interview night, the interviewers will be given a digital copy of each student’s job application together with his résumé.
Each interview is scheduled for 25 minutes which includes time for the interviewers to give feedback to the students on their strengths and weaknesses. Specific times will be allocated in the week before the interviews and this information will be given to each student.
University Information Night (Year 11)
Students in Year 11 will have a night where they will be spoken to about tertiary opportunities appropriate to their interests for post-school educational opportunities. This is a new initiative and is designed to complement the Careers Market Excursion in Year 12.
The aim of the evening is to promote understanding regarding the process of applying for the UAI and to facilitate information dissemination regarding specific career decisions.
Careers Market (Year 12)
Year 12 students will also have the opportunity of attending the Careers Market at Hills Grammar. This will give them the opportunity of interfacing with University Representatives and accessing information on specific areas of interest.
Involvement in Careers (Parents, Old Boys and Friends)
I would like to recognise the work that has been done by various groups that have assisted with the Careers Program in the past. Certainly Careers cannot function as well as it has without this sort of support. I would like to invite those interested in helping with careers in 2008 to contact me either by the attached form, phone or email. We need help with interview nights as outlined on the slip below.
We are also looking to expand the service that we can provide with Careers but help with this is needed. Mr. Ashley McKertich has offered to help coordinate a team of interested parents and friends to create a Careers Council to assist in the operation of the careers department. The work would involve: brainstorming ideas for improved practices; researching and packaging information on careers; assistance with work experience monitoring; and creation of employer network connections and industry based affiliations.
If you seek any further information, don’t hesitate to ring me at school 9651-4066 or alternatively by email at greg.baird@redfield.nsw.edu.au
Yours sincerely,
Greg Baird
Deputy Director of Studies
