World-first games business incubator program and scholarships

The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) is launching the world's first games business incubator program designed to help graduates create their own independent game businesses and commercialise their innovative digital media content.

The new line up of initiatives consists of a Vocational Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship, three Business Incubator Centres (in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra), a $4,000 Games Conference Scholarship and a $6,000 Business Development Scholarship all aimed at harnessing innovation and new business growth in the game development industry.

The Incubator Program was launched by AIE’s CEO, Vicki De Margheriti, who spoke about AIE's not for profit charter to provide opportunities to it's graduates and the need to focus just as much on job creation as job training.

"The AIE was the first educator in Australia to offer nationally accredited courses for the interactive entertainment industry. This is another world-first initiative that is well placed to provide real employment" the AIE CEO said.

Under the 12 month Incubator Program, successful applicants will be provided with the necessary equipment, software, and serviced office accommodation (including internet and basic reception services), that a typical start-up company would benefit from having. The new courses will focus on teaching the skills needed to establish a small business developing and commercialising independent games and simulations for mobile devices, consoles and computers. Graduates will be focused on establishing and building out their business, and will be provided intense mentoring by industry practitioners, consultants and teachers.

"As a successful entrepreneur I know the level of dedication and seed capital needed to bring forth a good idea to market." said Mr. John De Margheriti, Chairman of the AIE.

Mr De Margheriti went on to say that "We don't expect all the ideas and ventures to succeed, but we do expect to become a future powerhouse of innovation and job creation in Australia. The AIE and its investor benefactors are putting their money behind AIE’s graduates, and the wealth and IP created staying with the graduates. "

Enrolments for Stage 1 of the Incubator Program are now open and interested persons are encouraged to attend an Information session at each AIE Campus from 6 - 7pm, Thursday 13th October 2011, or find out more online at www.AIEincubator.com. To arrange interview or for more information, please contact Celine Battendier, Marketing Coordinator on 612 8514 8800 or 0404 836 036.

About AIE: The Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) is Australia's most awarded educator for the 3D animation, game development and visual effects industries. AIE courses are practical, 100% relevant and delivered by industry-experienced teachers in a seriously fun and creatively demanding studio environment. For more information visit www.aie.edu.au

SCU College opens up new pathway to University

Southern Cross University has announced the establishment of SCU College, to provide new pathways into University and encourage greater participation in higher education across the region.

The College, which is wholly owned by Southern Cross University, will begin operation in 2012 with the first new courses expected to be available from Session 2, 2012, starting in June.

SCU College will offer Associate Degrees in a number of key areas including business, health, science and arts, through a network of learning centres from Coffs Harbour to the Gold Coast and via distance education. It will involve key strategic relationships with Gold Coast Institute of TAFE and North Coast TAFE.

"This is a really exciting development for the University and our partners, which will open up new opportunities to students across our region and beyond. We are committed to providing innovative ways for people who have the aptitude and ability to undertake higher education, to gain access to the benefits that university qualifications bring to their lives and the lives of their families," Professor MacGillivray, Southern Cross University Deputy Vice Chancellor, said.

"The SCU College will provide access to higher education for a cohort of students who may have the ability but not have had the level of preparedness to access university.

"What we are providing is a stepping stone into higher education. Students will be able to exit with an Associate Degree or continue on into a full degree course at Southern Cross University."

Professor MacGillivray said a key focus for SCU College would be providing a supportive and nurturing learning environment, with dedicated College staff and staff from TAFE.

SCU College will incorporate the University's foundation program, Preparing for Success, which has proved to be an excellent pathway for people to gain the core study skills, confidence and competencies to progress to an undergraduate degree. It will also include the University's English Language Centres, which are located at the Gold Coast, Lismore and Coffs Harbour.

"We are also currently looking at options for additional learning centres in various regional locations," he said.
