NSW Minerals Council Careers In Mining Dinners

If you are a student in Years 10-12 or you are a parent or teacher of students in Years 10-12, we strongly encourage you to attend one of NSWMC’s Mining Careers Dinners. These dinners are a valuable appetiser for those considering enrolment in minerals related tertiary courses, or indeed for those who are still undecided about their career and/or university options.

The evening provides the opportunity to hear first-hand from undergraduates and graduates from mining related courses about their chosen career pathways, their experiences, both at university and in the industry and the variety of career opportunities available in the minerals industry, both in NSW and even globally. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of current students, graduates, university staff and representatives from local mining companies.

To request a booking form or to register your interest in attending a ‘Careers in the Minerals Industry Dinner', please email education@nswmin.com.au

The NSW Minerals Council will again be hosting these Dinners in 2011 in three locations: Orange (Central West), Maitland (Hunter Valley) and Wollongong (Illawarra). The three Dinners will be held in June 2011 with tentative dates as follows:

Orange: Wednesday 8 June
Wollongong: Thursday 16 June
Maitland: Thursday 23 June

CSU - Mentors for new students

The move to university is being made easier for new students with the introduction of a mentor program at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Bathurst and Wagga Wagga. The Student Mentor Program offers new on-campus and distance education students extra support during their first year at CSU. The student mentors are trained by the University’s Division of Student Services and then matched with new students in a similar course. The support offered by the new program includes information from the student mentor on where to go for academic assistance or information about CSU. The contact between mentor and the new student can be direct or via the telephone or by email. The volunteer scheme has so far attracted 35 mentors. . "I found my first year at university rather daunting and confusing, so I feel the Student Mentor Program is one way these feelings can be alleviated in new students," Bachelor of Arts (Psychology, Animation and Visual Effects) student Ms Georgina McMahon explains. "My role is to oversee the program, making sure mentors are offering new students the correct support. It is hoped this program will discourage any struggling new students from giving up and dropping out of university."
