The University of Sydney, Robotics Research

Rio Tinto has announced major funding for one of the world's largest civilian robotics research centres, a centre for mining automation, which will be based at The University of Sydney.

The centre for mine automation, which will be led by Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, will be based at the University's Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) with the aim of developing and implementing the vision of fully autonomous and remotely operated mining processes.

"To the best of our knowledge this is the single largest investment in robotics research anywhere in the world and will confirm the position of ACFR as one of the world's leading robotics research institutes," Professor Durrant-Whyte said.

TheAustralian Centre for Field Robotics(ACFR) at The University of Sydney is one of the largest and most successful robotics research groups in the world.

UTS $48,000 ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS

There are up to 20 Cooperative scholarships available for students in the Bachelor of Engineering, Diploma in Engineering Practice in various majors. Most are industry sponsored and valued from $12,000 to $48,000.

The RTA will also sponsor up to 20 Engineering scholarships for current school leavers with a rural/regional NSW or ACT residential address. These are valued at $48,000 tax free over the 5 year BE DipEngPrac degree with a major in either Civil or Civil and Environmental Engineering.

EnergyAustralia Apprenticeships, Cadetships & Traineeships

We offer five apprenticeship programs, each leading to a nationally recognised qualification. During your apprenticeship, you’ll get comprehensive job-related training, paid leave to attend TAFE, and gain experience by working in a number of different areas in the company.

The Electrical Engineering Cadetship Program combines full time University study and work experience at EnergyAustralia. Cadetships have a minimum work experience component of eighty (80) weeks over the five year program.

"Your Eyes Only"

Your Eyes Only is a new creative grant opportunity for young people 12 -15 years to celebrate the strengths of their community by submitting a creative image celebrating their community through their eyes.

Successful applicants will nominate a community group working with young people in their community (for example a school, youth group or sporting group) to receive a donation. This donation would then be used by the community group to further its work by either purchasing much needed equipment or adding funds to an existing program. There will be two grant rounds during 2007.

Metro Screen invites you to the Certificate IV in Screen graduation screening and reminds you that there are only a few places left in our next course.

Metro Screen will showcase these new Australian works by the next generation of filmmakers. The course allowed it's soon to be graduates the opportunity to produce films while gaining a complete education in short film, television production and documentary making as well as screenwriting, producing, directing, camera, lighting, sound and editing.

Films screening include psychological dramas and documentaries on traditional Tongan values in Sydney culture and a factory who forces its workers to come to work every day to do nothing rather than pay out their entitlements after its closure.

At the screening audience members will be given the opportunity to meet these students, their tutors and Metro Screen staff.

To be a part of the next Certificate IV in Screen and be given the opportunities our current students have had simply enroll now. There are a limited number of places still available in this highly regarded industry standard course. The next course will run from July 16.

CSU partners IBM to raise IT skills

Charles Sturt University (CSU) and international computing giant IBM have announced a scholarship and internship program that will see CSU information technology (IT) students gain invaluable industry experience with IBM in Bathurst while completing their degrees. Initially six students will receive scholarships from IBM while they work for 40 weeks part time with the global information technology provider, developing skills in application development and maintenance and IT helpdesk support. “This program provides an exciting opportunity for the University’s students to engage with one of the world’s leading corporations in providing quality courses and graduates for the information technology industry,” said Professor John Hicks, Dean of CSU’s Faculty of Business.

Science Alliance is the banner under which the Faculty of Science runs a number of programs, events and publishes a newsletter four times per year.

The main aim of Science Alliance is to educate members about the activities, achievements and news relating to science at The University of Sydney. The flagship programs under Science Alliance include the Siemens Science Experience, the Gifted and Talented Discovery Program, the Sydney Science Forum and Kickstart Science.

Many of these programs are specifically designed to cater to the diverse needs of students who have a passion for science and would like to learn more about where this exciting area can take them.
