Work Experience

In recent years more and more students are doing work placements as part of a VET course in Year 11 & 12, and many students have part-time jobs. However these experiences are not the same as work experience, which can still be of great value to a student. Many schools no longer offer work experience, and if this is the case at your school you could consider doing work experience during the holidays. To go on work experience during the holidays it is most important that you arrange to have insurance cover, and one company which provides this is IC Frith & Associates (http://www.icfrith.com.au/html/Work_Experience_Home.cfm).

Great reasons to go on Work Experience:
1. To get a job.
If you are leaving school soon and looking for a job then doing work experience a few times may well land you the job. Once an employer has seen you at work for a week you will have a terrific advantage over other job seekers. It is also a great way to get a part time job while you are still at school.
2. To find out if you like a job.
Students often choose subjects for Years 11 and 12, and choose their university and TAFE courses, based on the job that they think that they want. It makes sense to try the job for a few days first. Maybe it's not such a great job for you after all!
3. To find out what you need to do to prepare for a job.
Maybe you need to improve your fitness, or to study chemistry, or to aim for a particular university course.
4. To get a good reference.
At the end of your work experience the employer will fill in an evaluation sheet on you. A good evaluation is worth its weight in gold, and some employers won’t even consider you if you haven’t done work experience!

There are many other valid reasons for doing work experience including just finding out what the world of work is like.

Year 10 2007 - Work Experience

Parents/Careers:    Please CLICK HERE to read the Work Experience letter to Parents/Carers.

Students:

  •         Work experience is an important part of the school curriculum, and in 2007 you will be participating in the Work Experience Program from the 4th - 8th June 2007.
  •         Optional extra week(s) of work experience may be organised by you, for after the School Certificate (12th and 13th November). Dates would be:

1.      19th - 23rd November 2007

2.      26th - 30th November 2007

4.      10th - 14th December 2007

  • Your Work Experience forms are due to me by the end of lunchtime on Wednesday 4th April 2007.
  • If you organise work experience on a building site you must see me immediately to organise a White Card (previously known as a Green Card). The cost is approximately $120 and involves attending a one day course from 7.30-3pm at Lidcombe, Comet Training, and is close to Lidcombe Railway Station.
  • Some ideas for Work Experience can be obtained by:
    1. Your parents, friends of the family, neighbours, etc  (that is called networking)
    2. Look at the list of over 400 ideas in the Careers Office
    3. Try looking up the yellow pages for contacts
    4. Look in the local papers
    5. Look in the Saturday morning papers
    6. Ask your favourite subject teachers
    7. Ask Mrs Perry
  • When you identify an employer that you would like to do work experience with, you will then need to contact them. You need to introduce yourself, ask if they would take you for work experience, and then make an appointment to meet them, so that they can fill out your form. Alternately, you could ask for their fax number and fax it to them.
  • Remember to consult me for help of any kind. I will not know of your problems or issues if you do come to see me; and I may not be able to help if enquiries are left to the last minute.
  • If you need a replacement of "Your Student Placement Record" CLICK HERE for page 1. For pages 2, 3 and 4 you need to download them by going to https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/vetinschools/worklearn/worklearnpolicy.html and clicking on Student Placement Record. The Student Placement Record will need to be completed and signed by you, your employer, your parent/carer, and finally your careers adviser.

Safety On Work Experience
Your health and safety is of the utmost importance while you are on work experience. Before you go on work experience your employer should have agreed that any Occupational Health & Safety risks will have been assessed and managed, and that you will be given induction training when you arrive. You should go to the following websites to read about workplace safety and work through the games and/or tests. www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/default.htm. workcover.cadre.com.au/index_old.html

Work Experience at the Zoo

Both Taronga and Western Plains Zoos offer work experience, but usually only one person per school per year. Most weeks would be fully booked by the start of each year!
