Spotlight on TAFE Pathways to University
Did you know that if you complete a TAFE Diploma (and sometimes a Certificate iv will suffice) you will, in most cases be able to gain entry to university without an ATAR being taken into consideration??? Often the TAFE or Private Provider Diploma articulates directly into a degree. Did you know that from this Year you can gain a degree from TAFE???? An example of a degree from TAFE is the Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) & Advanced Diploma of Accounting. This innovative new program allows students who enrol in the dual award degree to obtain 2 recognised qualifications after successful completion of their studies in only 3 years. Studies are undertaken at both the ACU Nth Sydney campus and the NSI Nth Sydney College. Students who complete the dual award are eligible for associate membership of CPA and entry into the CA program. This course as opposed to a full time uni course will save you $5000 in the cost of a degree! Entry to the course is open to students who have completed the HSC or equivalent.
Another 2 examples are 1. Bachelor of Business Studies (CSU)…. From the Advanced Diploma qualification in Accounting, Business, Events, Hospitality, Human Resources, Marketing, Management or tourism you can complete in 1 yr a B.Business Studies awarded by CSU. You therefore complete the Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Degree in three years! 2. Bachelor of Human Resource Management (ACU) & Advanced Diploma Of Management (HR)- dual qualification in 3 years, taught at both ACU and Crows Nest TAFE. TAFE also now offer a degree in Interior Design at Enmore College of TAFE. Did you realise that 50,607 university graduates enrolled in TAFE NSW in 2009!!!To obtain more info re Tafe /uni pathways see www.tafensw.edu.au/career/pathways/tafe_to_university.htm
DENVER - A website has come out with what it believes are the most stressful and least stressful jobs of 2011 and, according to CareerCast.com, the news business is a stressful industry to be in.
Here is the full list of the top 10 most stressful jobs:
1. Commercial pilot
2. Public relations officer 3. Corporate executive 4. Photojournalist 5. Newscaster 6. Advertising account executive 7. Architect 8. Stockbroker 9. Emergency medical technician (EMT) 10. Real estate agent The least stressful job, according to CareerCast.com, is an audiologist, because it is not physically demanding or stressful, but still requires attention to detail and concentration.
Here is the full list:
1. Audiologist
2. Dietician 3. Software engineer 4. Computer programmer 5. Dental hygienist 6. Speech pathologist 7. Philosopher 8. Mathematician 9. Occupational therapist 10. Chiropractor I must say I feel this list is somewhat intriguing and perhaps arguable. My daughter happens to be an audiologist. Her comment…try telling a parent their beautiful newborn baby is profoundly deaf. Then tell audiologists they don’t have a stressful job!!!!! ![]() Careers News

Thursday 5th May – University of Sydney
Spotlight on University of Tasmania
Last week I was given the opportunity along with 21 other interstate career advisors to visit the University of Tasmania. I came away with the opinion that UTAS is an amazing university with lots of opportunities for our boys. The university has 3 campus’s Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. Many faculties are on separate sites throughout these places. The buildings and facilities were state of the art and the lecturers’ very passionate people. Graduates and lecturers are sought after world wide and several courses have provided world leaders in their field.
Many of the courses require only a 65 ATAR for entry not because they are less challenging or less recognised but purely due to supply & demand.
Courses available with a 65 ATAR include Arts (majors include journalism, criminology, IR, Environmental Studies, Music, Psychology, Sociology) Social Science, Police Studies, Business, Economics, Hospitality Management, Tourism Management, Education (Design & Technology , PE, Primary), Health Science, Ag Science, Antarctic Science, Agriculture, Architecture, Behavioural Science, Computing, Environmental Design, Environmental Science Marine Science, Information Systems, Natural Environment & Wilderness Studies, Psychology, Resource Management, Science, Surveying & Spatial Science.
Other courses and their ATAR’s are as follows: Biomedical Science 75, Biotechnology & Medical Research 85, Exercise Science 75, Health Science (Environmental Health) 70 (there is an Australian wide shortage of these people) Medical Radiation Science 80 Medicine 95, Paramedic Practice (Sydney campus at Rozelle 2yrs fast tracked), Pharmacy 80, Law 65 into Arts or Business etc then study 2 law subjects with a merit list allowed to transfer into law in Yr 2)
The National Maritime College has to be seen to be believed. This is a world class facility where degrees related to boats and maritime activities are taught. I experienced the simulator of the Queen Mary ship coming into Sydney Harbour on a wet day! Truly amazing! Graduate employment is 100% due to the strong international reputation and close industry links. Courses include: Degrees in Marine Environments, Maritime Operations, Marine Engineering, Maritime Management, Maritime Logistics Management, Naval Architecture, and Ocean Engineering.
Some highlights and comments from my trip include: The Conservatorium of Music was amazing and so was Dr Andrew Legge the Head of School and world renowned pianist. He has a Steinway in his office!! Musicians at this facility have so many opportunities including an amazing amount of 1 on 1 time with tutors. All students are matched with a member of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and receive exceptional experiences due to this. The Art School and the School of Performing Arts also has incredible facilities and teachers. The Architecture School also has a degree in Fine Furniture making. The equipment available was state of the art. The Architecture Building was previously where trains were built and many pieces of equipment have been kept as pieces of Tasmania’s history within the building. The school of Agriculture assured us there were heaps of jobs for their graduates as in 30 years the world population will have increased 25% but resources will not have increased. Accommodation at UTAS is fantastic and cheap compared to Sydney. All in all for the right student who would like to study at a smaller and friendly yet world acclaimed uni UTAS meets the bill. Talk to me if interested.

Spotlight on Engineering
What is it?
Engineers are the people who make great ideas happen – problem solvers who search for quicker better and more efficient ways to use the forces and materials of nature to bring to life exciting new innovations. Some of the greatest achievements of the 20th century such as electrification, automobiles, health technologies, space travel, and high performance materials are part of our lives today because engineers have used their mathematical and scientific knowledge to make them a reality.
Engineering is an exciting and challenging career with excellent job prospects, high earning potential, opportunities to travel overseas and a chance to make a real contribution to the world.
Is it for me?
If you like solving problems, enjoy science, and maths, and are looking for an exciting and challenging career; engineering could be the career path for you.
What are my career prospects?
Engineers are in high demand across the world in a huge variety of industries in health, the built and natural environment, foods, medicine, and aerospace.
Gaining entry to courses.
Many universities offer Engineering including USYD, UNSW, UTS, Macquarie, Wollongong, ANU and Newcastle. Some universities offer a flexible first year where you try all the many strands of engineering prior to deciding which you will specialise in eg mechanical, civil, mining computer etc. Most uni’s require a mark above 80 however some unis now offer an alternate entry scheme whereby if you obtain a reasonable ATAR and can show motivation and keenness to do engineering you may gain entry. See me for more details on these schemes and courses.
