Notre Dame University
Situated at Broadway close to UTS and Sydney uni, Notre Dame is a private catholic funded Uni with fees comparable to public unis. ND set an indicative ATAR of 70 for all their courses bar law and which is 90. They ask for a personal portfolio from students and they take this into account for entry as much as the ATAR as they consider persons academic results are not always indicative of their success at uni. Every course at Notre Dame has an internship component (the only uni to do this) and all lecturers are also practitioners in their field. The university has about 3000 students of which only 50% are catholic. ND has an early entry scheme. Application forms will be available from the careers office in the next couple of weeks.
Applied Mathematics
As the services sector booms, businesses go global and environmental issues present difficult trade offs for government and industry, skills and experience in Applied Mathematics are increasingly being sought after by employers.
Business analysts use Applied Mathematics to solve complex organisational challenges, such as the best brewing schedule at a multi-national beer producer or the best transport solution for the delivery of confectionary products to supermarkets. Outside of business Applied Mathematics is used in a wide variety of industries to answer questions such as: What are the best vaccine schedules for children? How do habitat range and predator population affect conservation strategies for an endangered frog? And how do we get that new TV satellite into orbit? Examples of career pathways can be found at www.newcastle.edu.au/faculty/science-it/degree-programs/pathways/

spotlight on – Surveying
Surveying is one of the oldest professions. Just like doctors, architects, lawyers and engineers, surveying is a highly skilled university-trained profession. Without surveyors we can’t build roads & cities, we can’t define property, we can’t find or mine resources, we can’t measure changes in the earth, we can’t understand our waterways, we can’t find ancient ruins and we can’t use Google Earth! The problem is Australia does not have enough SURVEYORS! Australian surveyors are among the best in the world with constant job opportunities around the world. Working with the latest technology you might be measuring polar ice caps, building skyscrapers, or developing new land for housing. Surveying pays well too! A graduate straight out of uni can start on $45-50K and senior surveyors earn well over $100K per year! This is a job where you can work indoors and outdoors, work for a big or a small firm and have job security. See www.alifewithoutlimits.com.au

Spotlight on a GAP Program
I have just discovered a Gap Program I didn’t previously know about called Madventurers. This is a UK based company but has some fascinating opportunities for our boys. They run award winning projects and adventures lasting from 2-12 weeks in 10 destinations. You work as part of a team alongside local communities in developing countries around the world. Every project is led by an experienced Madventurer Crew Leader. The project I am highlighting because I think it would be suitable for many students at EBHS is the Sports program which allows you to use your skills to coach children and adults in the developing world. For example you can go to Fiji and choose to focus on all or one of the following: rugby, netball, hockey, tennis or swimming. Imagine going into the primary & secondary schools to provide rugby coaching - Fiji’s most popular sport! There are many other types of programs. For a brochure see me or see www.madventurer.com
