Green Careers - Make a Difference

With concerns for the environment bringing a greater awareness and the introduction of many new environmental regulations, there’s no doubt that the colour of the future is green. More and more jobs will be created to help people adapt to these changes and a whole new industry is opening up, so if you want to be a part of the green revolution, read on.

Green careers contribute to a more sustainable world. They can include a wide variety of jobs and occur in most industry sectors. Examples of green occupations include park ranger or ecologist. However, green jobs exist in almost any career field or industry. There are green jobs at all education and skill levels.

There are emerging industries that support environmentally friendly products, services and technologies. Solar and wind power technologies, hybrid cars and aquaculture are some examples. Electricians and plumbers, however, can work with both traditional energy sources and with solar energy. Construction workers can also work on energy-efficient designs.

Green jobs are not all scientific, technical or practical. New green companies need accountants, human resource staff, receptionists, sales people and others. Existing companies are adopting new technologies and work practices to become green.

To learn more about this exciting field, visit the website below for a great list of resources and contacts.

Extreme Science Experience - Melbourne 2010

The 2010 Extreme Science Experience will be held at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 20 May 2010.

Australia will face a shortage of 20,000 scientists and engineers by 2012, according to a Commonwealth Department of Education Science and Training audit published in 2006. The same report found that the percentage of students choosing to study science in secondary school is declining, with Year 12 science enrolments falling from 19.1 per cent of total enrolments in 1993 to 15.4 per cent of total enrolments in 2003.

"Extreme Science Experience is designed to help stem that decline by giving keen students a unique opportunity to interact with Australia's top commercially successful scientists and engineers," said Bruce Kean, Chairman, ATSE Clunies Ross Foundation. The students attending Extreme Science Experience will learn that science and technology provides an exciting and rewarding career path by interacting with a range of professions, getting a glimpse of a typical day in the life of working scientists and engineers, and exploring key current issues during interactive breakout sessions."

Bernie Hobbs, star of the ABC programs 'the experiMENTALS' and 'The New Inventors', will MC the event and winners of the 2010 ATSE Clunies Ross Awards (Australia's top awards to recognise the simultaneous mastery of new technology and business expertise) will conduct workshops with the students during the day. The keynote speaker this year will be Australia's pioneering stem cell scientist, Professor Alan Trounson, who now heads up the world's wealthiest embryonic stem cell research group in the US.

Extreme Science Experience is free to attend and schools are welcome to bring up to six students.

Helping students of promise

The University of Sydney and The Smith Family have renewed their joint commitment to supporting students of promise, with the University pledging more than a quarter of a million dollars to provide scholarships to disadvantaged students.  The two organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work in partnership during 2010-2012 to support disadvantaged children to stay engaged with school, and ultimately have the opportunity to participate in university education.

The three year 2010-2012 partnership commits the University of Sydney to provide $90,000 per annum to support Learning for Life scholarships for secondary school students who meet The Smith Family's eligibility criteria - which must be students of low income families, and families with a commitment to their child's education.

The University will also provide $10,000 pa to support The Smith Family's Bella Learning for Life Workshop, a program of art-making workshops and exhibition tours for Learning for Life students aged between 15 and 18 years old.

The partnership will also include collaborative activities such as CONverge which aims to bring together interest, opportunity and resources in a musical context using voice as the instrument. The two organisations will also host a University Experience Day at the University annually so that students can familiarise themselves with the University environment and hopefully develop an aspiration to attend.

On the job training, or learning by books or the internet was undertaken by nearly all (84%) Australians of working age.

About one quarter (26%) participated in formal study at school, college, TAFE or university with slightly more (28%) taking courses that do not lead to a formal qualification.

People with a Bachelor degree or higher were most likely to be employed as professionals or managers and people without a non-school qualification were most likely to be employed as clerical and administrative workers or labourers.

The most common field of study in formal learning was management and commerce (26%) followed by society and culture (20%). The ABS also found that women are more likely than men to posses a Bachelor degree, but men are more likely to have completed a Certificate III/IV.

Since 2001, the proportion of people with a tertiary qualification has increased by 13%.

The main reason people undertook work-related courses was that it was a requirement of their job. The health care and social assistance industry accounted for the majority of non-formal learning followed by the education and training industry.

Excluding the completion of school study, Australians of working age are more likely to have attained a Certificate III/IV (2.5 million) as their highest education qualification than any other educational qualification.

TAFE was the most popular institution for tertiary studies in the last 12 months, with over 300,000 students having completed study at TAFE compared with approximately 240,000 students at university. ACT residents are more likely to have completed a Bachelor degree or above (36%) than those persons in any other state or territory.

First Year Experience in Australian Universities

A study of the experiences of first year students in Australian Universities conducted by Centre for the Study of Higher Education, The University of Melbourne, Griffith Institute for Higher Education and Griffith University has produced some interesting findings.

The first year students in 2009 are more organised, pragmatic and focussed than their 2004 counterparts. More believe they were ready to choose a university course, fewer considered deferring and fewer plan to change course or institution after first year. Parental expectations figure more highly in their decision to go to university.

The school-leavers in the sample report an easier academic transition to university, reflecting, it seems, the efforts of both schools and universities. The 2009 students are more likely to believe the final year of school prepared them well for university and their university subjects are building on their schooling. They are also more satisfied with the advice they received on subject choices.

The study reveals important trends in students’ study habits and patterns of engagement with university. Some of these are subtle, however they point to new dynamics in the student-university relationship that have implications for the quality of educational outcomes.

Australian Defence Force Gap Year

Gap Year is an Australian Defence Force (ADF) program for students or recent school leavers. Individual programs run across Navy, Army and Air Force and are designed to give you detailed insight into how the ADF operates. Think of it as a once in a lifetime work experience placement in the ADF.

You will also gain invaluable life skills and job training that is just as valuable in the civilian world as in the ADF.

You'll earn more than $40,000 per year and there's no requirement to stay beyond this point.

Am I guaranteed a GAP Year placement?
No. There is a selection process for Gap Year and a limited number of placements are available each year.Due to the popularity of Gap Year, applicants will be directed to complete a full application online. During this application we will ask you a range of questions to determine your eligibility, suitability and to determine what sort of Gap Year roles may suit you. Selected candidates will be contacted and proceed into a more detailed and face-to-face recruitment process. If you are not selected you may apply for another ADF role, or you may wait to see if a second round offer is made. Candidates selected to proceed will go through the normal Defence recruitment process, details of this are at recruitment centre. Applicants are then allocated placement based upon successful assessment and readiness to join. Navy candidates will be considered for Officer and General Entry roles, while Army will be considered for General Entry roles only. Air Force is open to Officer Entry roles only.

What do I learn?
During basic training you'll be introduced to a variety of military equipment, learn general service skills, eat the same food and use similar recreational facilities as our regular ADF members. You’ll have access to new and emerging technologies and learn how to become self-reliant.

The website contains further information about the program, it is important to read it carefully. Gap Year applications will reopen from 1 May to 30 June 2010 for the 2011 intake. Applications must be received online. Please visit the website below from 1st May to start the application process.
