The Institute of Photonics and Optical Science

The Institute of Photonics and Optical Science (IPOS), the newest institute in the University of Sydney and the only one of its kind in Australia, launched this week with a one-day symposium The Photonic Universe - Faster, Further, Smarter.

IPOS research spans all areas of optics and photonics from fundamental to applied, including the groundbreaking areas of meta-materials and cloaking, speeding up and greening the internet, structural health monitoring, as well as the pioneering fields of astrophotonics, medical and quantum photonics.

"IPOS has broken new ground in terms of what we have achieved and the amazing future directions in which we are now headed," says Professor Ben Eggleton, ARC Federation Fellow and IPOS Director. "We're discovering new ways with photonics and optics that we never imagined."

Eggleton says that by working across diverse areas such as physics, mathematics, chemistry and microscopy, ideas that were once thought to be in the realm of fiction, such as invisibility or remote surgery, are now becoming reality. He adds, "Photonics has only just touched on what it's capable of and being part of a broad team pushes us to truly explore new concepts and ideas even further. 'What if?' is a very exciting phrase.

IPOS is making plans for a major new building to house staff and research infrastructure. IPOS includes the activities of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS) in the School of Physics, the former Optical Fibre Technology Centre, those of the Fibre Optics and Photonics Laboratory in the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, and astronomical instrumentation (Astrophotonics) programs of the Sydney Institute of Astronomy in the School of Physics. IPOS draws together research and teaching expertise across the Schools of Physics, Electrical and Information Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry and the Electron Microscope Unit. In 2010 IPOS will launch a new Masters in Photonics program.

2009 Know the Deal youth video competition

The Know the Deal video competition was developed to make sure young people know what to expect when they start work and how to protect themselves from exploitation.

The competition challenges high school students (from Years 7 - 10) to produce an engaging short video that includes important messages about workplace issues from the OIR Young People at Work website, such as unpaid work trials, rates of pay, leave entitlements and signing workplace agreements.

As well as having fun, the students who enter the competition will be meeting planned learning outcomes from their school Commerce syllabus and will have the chance to win cash prizes for themselves and their school.

These include $500 for the winning entry and $1,000 for their school, with prize categories for both metropolitan and country NSW schools.

The closing date for competition entries is 31 July 2009.

UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA EDUCATION COURSES RESTRUCTURE & 2010 UNIVERSITY ACCOMMODATION RESERVATIONS

PROPOSED EDUCATION COURSES RESTRUCTURE
The UTAS Faculty of Education is proposing three major changes to the undergraduate Education courses, effective Semester 1 2010. These changes are:
1) Consolidating 4 existing Education courses; namely the Bachelor of Education & Care (Early Years), Bachelor of Education (In-service), Bachelor of Human Movement and Bachelor of Education; into 1 flexible course – the NEW Bachelor of Education.
The Bachelor of Education is being redeveloped in-line with the UTAS Common Course Structure Project and national teacher accreditation. The course will offer flexible pathways and more options to study by distance.
2) The graduate entry Bachelor of Teaching is being rebadged and redeveloped into a Master of Teaching.
3) Offering a NEW Bachelor program focusing on Physical Activity (3 years) which is not a teaching qualification, but prepares students for a career in coaching, health promotion, fitness centre management, and leading physical education programs.
More information about the proposed changes will be available in the coming months, visit: www.educ.utas.edu.au.

2010 UNIVERSITY ACCOMMODATION RESERVATIONS
The University of Tasmania owns and manages student accommodation at its Launceston and Hobart campuses. This accommodation includes Apartments, Units, Colleges and Halls of Residence. Because the accommodation is highly regarded, places fill quickly. With around 1,200 beds, it takes some time to offer and fill these places.
New for 2009: Early Applications and Offers
Accommodation for 2010 will begin to be reserved from April 2009. Students wanting accommodation in 2010 need to apply as soon as possible and preferably no later than the middle of 2009. Early reservation of accommodation means that your students will be advantaged with secure accommodation should they choose to apply for a University of Tasmania course or accept a University offer.
Accommodation applications are made online and there are no application fees. There is also no obligation to accept an accommodation offer should one be made. Students are therefore strongly advised to apply online for accommodation early in the year and before making an application for a University place. Accommodation applications are free and can be made at: www.utas.edu.au/accommodation/
Schools can find out more by directly contacting the Marketing & Projects Officer via email: steph.atkinson@utas.edu.au or telephone: (03) 6226 6417.
