 Dear Parent / Carer, All students in Year 10 are required to undertake Work Experience in 2007. The school is offering different dates in order to minimise disruption to school activities. Work Experience is a compulsory part of the Year 10 curriculum. The students are to choose dates from the following: Term 1 - Week 9, March 26-30 Term 2 - Week 7, June 4-7 Term 3 - Week 8, Sept 3-7 Term 4 - Weeks 8, 9 & 10 Dec 3-7, Dec 10-14 and Dec 17-21 (All three weeks if desired.) For students who have not yet started looking for a placement, the school is urging parents to encourage their child to actively seek an employment position. The earlier Work Experience is arranged, the better the chances of students getting a placement that they really want. The benefits to students in undertaking a Work Experience placement include: * Understanding a work situation * Trying out a job to see if it meets their interests * A chance to get into the workforce and meet people of different ages * An opportunity to show an employer their capabilities # * The possibility of gaining a part time job or perhaps apprenticeship # * Gaining self confidence in the workplace (# Past students have succeeded in these areas!) Students are asked to find their own placement, and this is where parents can help. Ask family, friends and neighbours if they know someone the student could contact. Approaching businesses directly often brings good results as it shows initiative. We would urge you to encourage your child to find his or her own placement, since this is training for when they enter the workforce after leaving school. If your student is having difficulty, he or she can discuss this with our Careers Advisers Ms Burrell, Ms Castle or Ms Fisher, who are very keen to assist.
