Macquarie University Scholarships & UNITEST aptitude test

Macquarie University is pleased to announce a new range of scholarships to be offered for the first time in 2008. The University will offer a wide range of scholarships that not only generously reward students who have demonstrated academic excellence; it will also have an equally strong commitment to equity.

From next year Macquarie University intends to use a combination of application methods including an application letter, a UAI rank and an aptitude test. Macquarie University's trial of the UNITEST aptitude test will begin in December, after the HSC is concluded, in time for the 2008 student cohort. Students will be able to apply online to sit the test from the end of August.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop skills and we encourage North Shore and Northern beaches candidates to apply. Licence is encouraged but not required. No experience necessary, training is fully funded and great opportunities to gain a full apprenticeship with a large variety of Bakers Delight stores on successful completion of the course.

18 August: Public talk - Telescopes of the future   

Join Professor Fred Watson and a panel of astronomers and engineers in a discussion about current and future technologies and what they can tell us about the universe.

19 August: Movies at Macquarie special double feature - Solarmax and Descent to Titan

These movies reveal the force and beauty of the universe. Following the movies a panel of experts will discuss solar max and other astronomical phenomena as well as the feats in engineering that made the creation of the movies possible.

20-22 August: Observatory tours and astronomical imaging

Visit Macquarie University 's Observatory, gaze at the stars through telescopes and binoculars, and take home a CD of your own photos of the universe.

24 August: Public lecture by Joe Silk - The dark side of the universe

Eminent UK cosmologist, Professor Joe Silk discusses the emergence of cosmic structure - an outcome that has been studied by peering back through the mists of time to the remote depths of the universe as well as by deciphering the fossil structure of nearby galaxies.

OCTOBER HOLIDAY MOVIE MAKING WORKSHOP 11 – 16 yr olds

In three intensive days, this hands-on course for young filmmakers will enable you to produce a digital micro movie using the latest technology. Discover your hidden potential whilst rotating through key crew roles. Gain experience in all aspects of filmmaking including: camera operation, lighting, sound recording, art direction, storyboarding, editing and directing.

Learn how to construct storyboards, shoot in the studio or on location with Sony HDV 1080i cameras, edit on Final Cut Pro, use GarageBand to compose music and pick up directing and screen acting tips from our experienced tutors. You will emerge from the workshop with an overall understanding of the filmmaking process, as well as the practical experience of making your own short film, from start to finish!

The films made by Channel Free participants have screened in film festivals all over the world, as well as at our annual Channel Free Screening held at the Chauvel Cinema, where you, your family and friends can watch your movies on the big screen.

Young people with little or no prior filmmaking experience are encouraged to enrol. If you already have some experience, then come along and watch it grow!

GREEN TEAM
This October, Channel Free participants have the opportunity make a film for the new Tropfest Junior competition by including the signature item “Green” in their films. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain access to the equipment, team and skills needed to make a film for a major festival. You could win awards and have your film seen by thousands!!!!

Remember the “Green” theme can be interpreted in many ways: green monster, green with envy, green for the environment, green hair… Whatever! You can have a green shoe appear in your film or have the whole story built around the theme of “GREEN”. What does Green mean to you?

The Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) motivates young people to learn about the brain – and has been created to inspire students to pursue careers in biomedical brain science.

TAFE NSW Riverina Institute - Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy courses in Albury

New Scholarship for Top Dental Student at Sydney Institute of TAFE

The Dental Technicians Registration Board is awarding an educational scholarship to the top graduate in the Advanced Diploma of Dental Prosthetics twice annually at the conclusion of each semester. This equates to 25% of the fee totalling $6625. It is only open to students who have worked in NSW for at least three years and who have paid their own way.

New UWS business degree gives students the industry edge

The three-year BBC degree, which begins in 2008, was launched by one of Australia's most successful business leaders, former CEO of Woolworths, Mr Roger Corbett, who praised the new program for its leadership development and industry relevance.

Students enrolled in the new BBC will receive a solid grounding in business skills during their first year - undertaking a range of common subjects that will give them a comprehensive overview of what business is really like before committing to a specialisation.

A unique component of the BBC degree is the Advanced Business Leadership Program (ABLP) - a specially-targeted learning and leadership initiative aimed at those UWS business students with a UAI cut-off of 90 and higher.

Students accepted into the ABLP will be mentored by key industry leaders over the duration of the degree - providing them with unique opportunities to develop their high-level business skills, entrepreneurial qualities and leadership potential.

UNSW Faculty of Engineering Admission Scheme (FEAS)

The Faculty of Engineering Admission Scheme (FEAS) is for the admission of undergraduate students to UNSW Faculty of Engineering degree programs (including the BSc Computer Science and BSc Food Science & Technology).

The cut-off for admission to UNSW engineering programs in 2008 is expected to be a UAI (or equivalent) of 88.00. Students who achieve a UAI (or equivalent) between 75.00 and 87.95 will be considered for admission under the Faculty of Engineering Admission Scheme (FEAS).

If you anticipate achieving a UAI (or equivalent) between 75.00 and 87.95 then to maximise your opportunities for admission you are strongly encouraged to submit an application for an interview under the Faculty of Engineering Admission Scheme (FEAS).

University of Wollongong Early Entry

If you are interested or passionate about a certain area of study we encourage you to apply for Early Entry at UOW. Early Entry is available in the faculties of Engineering, Informatics, Science and some degrees in the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences.

The Early Entry program at UOW allows current Year 12 students to apply for Early Entry into a number of degrees. Successful applicants receive either a guaranteed place or an offer that is conditional upon the results of their final exams.

Entry is based on academic record (including Trial HSC results) and an interview.

Successful applicants will still need to apply for University entry through UAC (Universities Admission Centre), with the University of Wollongong degree of their choice.

UWS Regional Bonus Scheme

In 2008, UWS will introduce a Regional Bonus Scheme for prospective students from Greater Western Sydney. If you have UWS as a preference and completed your HSC or International Baccalaureate (IB) in 2007, your admissions rank will automatically be increased by 5 points for all preferences except those courses with additional selection criteria.

The region-wide bonus of 5 points will be added to the admissions rank of all eligible students. To be eligible you must:

  • be sitting the NSW HSC or IB in 2007 and qualify for a UAI or IB Diploma
  • live in or attend a high school in the catchment area. Sydney's Greater West and South West, determined by postcode, is considered to be the natural drawing area of UWS.
  • achieve a minimum UAI or equivalent of 60.
