Ron Sylvester - Careers Adviser
This site is produced by Ron Sylvester. Ron was the Careers Adviser at Mitchell High School in Blacktown, NSW from 1994 to 2006. Prior to this Ron completed a teaching degree and spent five years working as a teacher of mathematics in both UK and NSW schools. Before going into teaching Ron had a wealth of "careers experience". Ron had various part time jobs while still at school including working in a frozen food factory, window cleaning, carrying holidaymakers suitcases in a barrow, and walking donkeys along the beach to give rides to holidaymakers. On leaving school Ron joined the British Army to do an apprenticeship in electronics. While waiting to go into the army he worked for 3 months as a butchers assistant. Ron served in the army for nine years with postings in the UK and Germany and left the army as a 1st Class Radar Technician. Ron has also worked for a total of nine years in Saudi Arabia for the Royal Saudi Arabian Air Force. Initially working for a British company, and then for Lockheed, Ron taught electronics in a training college and then worked as Senior Technician in charge of the overseas workers and the training of Saudi Warrant Officers in Radar Engineering. In between times he has also worked as a taxi driver and a Heavy Goods Vehicle driver. Before completing his teaching degree he had worked as a director in two catering equipment businesses. During this time he gained experience in running a business, book-keeping, sales, electrical work, plumbing, gas fitting, and employing staff (including young people straight from school). He also gained much inside information about the hospitality industry, working in many hotels, restaurants, and cafes. For the last two years of this time he also had the experience of running a business and attending the UK equivalent of TAFE (one day and one evening a week), to get a Higher National Certificate in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Doing this with two young children at home was not an easy experience! ![]() The aims of this site: 1.
