Macquarie University uniTEST

uniTEST is an equity initiative which recognises that the Universities Admissions Index (UAI) is not always the best indicator of aptitude or ability to undertake tertiary studies.
The UAI does not take into account the advantages that some students have had for example, access to facilities and coaching, nor the challenges faced by others who have the necessary talent and aptitude for tertiary level study, but who may have experienced difficulties or disadvantage at a crucial time in their schooling and that impacted on their final results. These experiences or disadvantages during their schooling may have impacted adversely on their UAI ranking and on their chances of obtaining an offer of university entry.

Macquarie is trialling a new entry pathway which will consider a number of factors in the selection process including the UAI rank, a tertiary study aptitude test, and an application.

How do I register for uniTEST?

Registrations need to be completed on-line, and will be accepted up until Monday 3rd December 2007.

When and where is uniTEST being run?

The test will be conducted on site at Macquarie University on Saturday 8th December. This will be the only test day and time offered.

Can anyone sit the uniTEST?

The uniTEST pathway is designed to support those who may have been disadvantaged during their schooling and which impacted on their final results.

For the trial, uniTEST is not available :
  • to international students, or
  • to applicants under 18 years of age unless you have satisfactorily completed the HSC or equivalent.

UTS offers the only Bachelor of Midwifery in NSW

Reversing the dire shortage of well-educated midwives underpinned UTS’s decision to offer a Bachelor of Midwifery for the first time in NSW in 2005.

The course allows students to become midwives without doing a Bachelor of Nursing degree first. It means people who are particularly interested in working in maternity care, as opposed to general health care, can now fast track their career.

Graduates from the course will readily find employment opportunities throughout Australia, particularly in rural and regional areas where the shortage of midwives is felt most keenly.

UTS will continue to provide its Graduate Diploma in Midwifery, allowing registered nurses to become midwives.

UWS Blacktown-Mt Druitt Clinical School

The University of Western Sydney's School of Medicine has launched its new clinical school for Blacktown - an important clinical facility to train more home-grown doctors for Greater Western Sydney.

Based at Blacktown Hospital, the Blacktown-Mt Druitt Clinical School is one of the key sites where UWS medical students develop their clinical skills and gain vital on-the-job hospital training.

The UWS School of Medicine had its historic first intake of 103 students earlier this year, with almost 60 per cent of those enrolled in the five-year Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery degree proud western Sydney locals.

The Commonwealth Government has also contributed $3 million in funding for the University toward the cost of building a Clinical Campus adjacent to Blacktown Hospital to accommodate the growing number of UWS medical students who will be based there full-time from 2009.

This is the second clinical school for the UWS School of Medicine, with the University opening its Macarthur Clinical School at Campbelltown Hospital in March.

Year 9 students offered hands-on science experience at UWS

The University of Western Sydney is holding its annual Science Experience at the Campbelltown Campus, 11-13 December 2007. The three-day Science Experience is open to all year nine students.

The program consists of interesting talks by experts, demonstrations, hands-on sessions in the University's laboratories, and field trips in the areas of engineering, medicine and science.

Dr Bhathal, Chairman of the Organising Committee, says the aim of the Siemen's Science Experience is to encourage more young local boys and girls from Greater Western Sydney to take up careers in engineering, medicine and science.

"The Science Experience is a tremendous opportunity for students to come and get a taste of what university life is like for three days," Dr Bhathal says.

"They will also be able to listen, meet and swap ideas with some of the University's nationally and internationally recognised academics who are experts in engineering, medicine and science."

Dr Bhathal says for students who are thinking of taking up a career in engineering, medicine or science it is a must attend event.

"Parents of year nine students should encourage their children to attend this exciting and innovative program which will broaden their children's perspective on the kinds of jobs that are available in these areas," Dr Bhathal says.

Students who have attended the previous year's Science Experiences have not only enjoyed the activities but have also found them extremely rewarding, Dr Bhathal says. "Many of those are now studying at the University of Western Sydney and at other universities."

Year nine students who wish to attend the Science Experience can obtain application forms from their Head Science Teacher at school, the Rotary Club in their local area or from Ros McCourt at the University of Western Sydney by calling (02) 4736 0135.
